What to buy on a day trip to France?

Hi all,

Just booked a day trip to France (with P&O ferries - £22 return for the car!). Got any tips on things to get? Going to Calais but I've got the whole day there so can travel around a little bit.

What things are really cheap over there at the moment? Has anyone got a places for lunch they can recommend around there too?

Cheers,
Steve

Car Oil is really cheap in the supermarkets, even cheaper than Costco here... 4ltr Mobil 1 in Costco is some £23 (inc VAT); Halfords/fuel pumps a lot more; French supermarkets for 5ltr is some €25...

Excellent! A few weeks ago I bought a small bottle of oil to top up my car as there weren't any big bottles in the shop. The small one will do me for a while but I'll make sure I stock up on the day trip.

Any other recommendations?

Fuel always used to be cheaper in France, but unleaded is about on par with UK prices; but diesel is around 15% cheaper so fill up the car over there.

Also washing powder is cheaper in France. But I normally stock up at Costco when they have one of their BOGOF voucher deals.

Cigarettes, then sell them on to friends. You should make £10 on each 200 you sell on. It is illegal of course.

take a drive to adinkerke in belgium, its only about 40 mins drive straight up the a16 if you need directions, just email me, golden virginia there costs about £3.20, over £9 in uk,
you can bring back 120 if there are 2 of you.

Buy some "good" wine that you will enjoy - it can be reasonably priced.

Then plenty of daily plonk - €6 will buy some very drinkable stuff.

After that, some nice cheese and fresh bread and have a small picnic :)

Otherwise it depends on what you are into...
