Another thing that may be useful to log is the SMART status - http://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htm
Of particular concern - reallocated sector count, pending sector count.
The pending sector count is suspect sectors that have not yet been reallocated, they should either revalidate good or reallocate when written, so a wiped disk should not have any pending.

On top of the other suggestions, one last (very useful tool) that you should have is Hard Disk Sentinel.
It reads the SMART data from your disks and gives a health report on them
