You re-sole them after they have a lot of wear on them, you can put a temporary protective metal plate on which takes a lot of the wear in the 'hot' spots (usually the outer heel - depends on how you walk and where you wear out the most).

I put a protective rubber sole on mine as I wanted to protect the leather more and make them last longer.

How "new" are they? U wouldn't exoect a new pair to need repair.

Well i have only worn them about 5 times, when i was younger i used to work with older people who always resoled as soon as they purchased i never understood this, but this is the first time i have had loake.

I normally buy cheap or rubber soles.

i think what you observed from these older people is the application of a rubber protective sole. http://www.styleforum.net/t/71164/your-opinions-on-installing-a-rubber-sole-over-leather-sole-any-good-cobbler-in-dc
