Looking to possibly book a weekend away in France around Christmas. I've never flown abroad before so I'm kinda clueless. As the title, when should I aim to get to the airport to make sure I have enough time. (potential flight is 19:45)

Thanks in advance! :)

2 hours should be sufficient.

If you want to be absolutely sure, then check the website of the flight company. You may be able to book in much before you travel and get your seats etc, depending on airline.

You can also have a look at the airport's website, that will give you an idea of what you can do to kill the time.

If you're not taking hold luggage and can check in online 30-45 minutes would be ok

Do that and you risk missing the flight. The thing that takes time is getting through security. I always fly hand baggage only and print off my boarding cards to avoid check in but I still arrive 2 hours before. Even so, last year security at Liverpool last year took so long there was no spare time before being called.

I always aim for 2 hours as the security queues can be horrendous sometimes (depending on the airport). I've had to run through the airport and made the flight with minutes to spare previously as some idiot smoked a cigarette in the toilets in the airport and caused a full scale evacuation of the pre-departuture security area. it's not worth the hassle and stress to save a few minutes at home or in the hotel.

depends on the day you are travelling especially if you are driving. I would aim on 2 to 3 hours before & just go for a beer if you are way early. Then just sit back & chillout.

If you factor in free parking at the hotel for the duration of your holiday then that is a no brainer but a flight at 19.45 is a hell of a wait after being chucked out of your hotel ;)

I know 2 hours can be a bit excessive when already checked in online but telling somebody who has never flown abroad before to get to an airport 30 minutes before there flight is due to take off is absolutely ridiculous.

which airport are you flying from? if it is Gatwick North and your flight is from gate 112 it could take you 15 to 20 minutes to walk there from the Departure Lounge. And that is if you are familiar with the airport. I always arrive 2 hours before flight and that is without luggage.

How are you getting to the airport? If you are parking at one of the airport car parks allow enough time for transfers etc. As most people have said allow 2 hours on top of transfers etc.

It depends on the airport and airline, but I would say for a flight "noob", I'd try to arrive at the airport 2 hours before the GATE OPENING TIME.

Security is a nightmare lately. I flew from Stansted on Saturday morning and my bag amongst many many others were rejected automatically by the scanners and sent to be searched. My bag was opened and swabbed and I was sent on my way. Took over an hour just to get through security. Funny thing was my bag passed through fine on the way home and it contents were the same!

In Europe two hours :D

I always aim to arrive two hours before the flight.
Then I add an hour for any problems with parking, then an hour for any problems on the journey.

In fact I'm just about to leave home for my summer holiday next year. Better safe than sorry.

If your going near xmas you can guarantee the airport will be busy

Woah, wasn't expecting so many replies so quickly :P Thanks all.

I live in Crewe an will be traveling from Manchester Airport so 45-60 mins to get to the airport.

The airline site says
Travelling with Hold luggage
Airport Check-in desks open 2 hours until 60 minutes before scheduled departure time.
Cabin bags only
Airport Check-in desks open 2 hours until 45 minutes before scheduled departure time.

If my flight is at 19:45, I guess I want to be at the airport at around 17:45?

Not sure if I'll drive or get the train. It's going to be during rush hour in the evening so not sure which would be best?

probably cheaper on the train then saves u parking fees it's not cheap to park there. if nobody's dropping u off. but yes aim to arrive 2 hours before your flight is good idea

having a quick look at train times they go around every hour 17.33 would be the best one but u may want go on the earlier one if u r like me a bit worried about trains 1 month open return is £11.30. so better of on the train it's a 8to 10 minute walk to the airport so u may need look at the directions before going and also make sure you know which terminal it is I ended up walking about 15 minutes once as went to the wrong terminal

I always allow 3 hours, one hour to check in, one hour to get through customs, one hour to get on plane.

I have come close to missing the flight when check in took nearly 2 hours.!.

2 hours is pushing it imo, 3 hours gives you a little grace.

D H is a coach driver for a national coach company and so many people moan coach is late they going to miss flight, when he checks with them on the ticket , the coach is due to get there at 1900 ( example ) and check in closes at 1903..... no one reads the ticket. States please leave 180 minutes before hand.

bare in mind driver has to unload all the luggage, and yours might not be at the front.
That's why driver asks where you are heading ( not because they interested ) but it's how they load the luggage.

he had a guy the other day who started taking loads of bags out just dumping them on the ground ( not gently either ) and when asked why said " I'm here at airport I'm off " it wasn't the airport he was due to fly from.

so DH had to spent 5 minutes loading it all back in.....which did delay coach.

if your driving your self then try to leave as must time as different airlines have changed their rules and times for check-ins.... also watch out for those parking companies dunno where your car will be stored.

DH said other day that airlines changing rules on lots on run up to Christmas... ( insider knowledge ) so double check everything so not caught out.

roads will be busier now, so have to allow time in case of an accident or road closure.

happy holidays
