My advice is best to get them when in a sale, not always easy to wait but most sets are usually found on sale at various times of the year at these places.

Amazon
- prices go up and down, never know when the one you want will be at the price you want to pay! uk.camelcamelcamel.com allows you to track the prices and email when it hits the price you want.
Argos - 20% off sales etc, might only be once a year!
ASDA - sale time, usually best instore if you're near a big one that stocks them.
ebay - not so much, unless you are happy to get a used one that may not be complete, or sets they don't produce anymore.
lego.com - may be the only place to get exclusives or hard to get sets, but usually at a premium price too, then again can be cheaper than Amazon and toysrus at times!
Sainsburys - sale time, usually best instore if you're near a big one that stocks them.
Smyths - sale time, usually best instore if you're near a big one that stocks them.
Tesco - sale time, usually best instore if you're near a big one that stocks them, sales or specials are quite good many times throughout the year at mine.
Toysrus - sale time, usually best instore if you're near a big one that stocks them.

That's about all I can recommend, other places also sell them but not usually at good sale prices.
Bit of a theme as you can see, when the shop isn't having a sale the price will be near RRP but at sale time fill yer boots!

The above recommendations go for other toys also (not at lego.com!)
Happy hunting :)

amazon is great for leggo especially if you dont mind "used". they come in bags with instructions instead of boxed.
