I'd be looking at getting a reasonably decent 125 so i wouldn't have to upgrade for a while.

Cheers.

Search on gumtree, piston heads or auto trader, and when you go to view the bike always check the frame number, and side fairings for deep scratches, make sure nothing near the handle bars are bent, look for any oil collects near bottom of the bike and ALWAYS check the chain. If you see any oil or deep scratches on the side or maybe a slightly bent bar anywhere on the bike then it's most likely been dropped and you should immediately walk away from it.
And as for gear I would go in to a local shop and get your sizes checked out. Once you are certain of your sizes hit up a search on eBay. Again always make sure you double check items before using them. You do not want to be riding around on a second hand helmet that already has a few cracks on it.
I would recommend looking at Scorpion made helmets, they really do help with wind noise reduction. Hope that helps.

sportsbikeshop for protective gear. used them many times always great service and they price match if you find cheaper elsewhere. Also racevisors for lids are good, Got a couple of helmets from them. If you are getting a 125 get a reliable make yamaha honda etc, dont go for a bike with small wheels - you will feel the potholes. My last 125 was a yamaha xenter - was pretty good for a small bike and they are cheap to buy,tax and insure.

numberworth on ebay

infinity
j&s
ghostbikes
sportsbikeshop

Helmets are all about fit - you need to wear them for 15 mins to be sure they are comfortable. buy the helmet in a shop that lets you try them on for a decent length of time.

it is certainly possible, both of mine were spotless when I bought them with 5k and 4k miles respectively

though I regret paying extra for the condition because the wind blew the first one over and it hit a wall on the way down, and my second one I fell off twice and got hit by a car

they certainly can take a beating though, first was was a ybr custom - not so tough, I found the build quality not so good (minor things like screws would strip easily and electrical things started going wrong) whereas my second one (honda cbf) I really can't complain. As I say, fell off twice and hit by a car and I still can't complain.

I'd recommend honda varadero if it's in your budget (2007 or later only) - 2012 ones pop up on ebay for about 2k usually - the people that own them always seem to keep them in top condition and they hold their value really well.

Not saying every single 125 will be perfect but there's always a few hidden Jem's in the dirt to be found. Found a 125 for my nephew a few months back with 4000 miles on it and it was mint i tell ya!

how big of a concern is rust on bikes? i mean superficial / minor rust on screws or the frame?

Any rust on screws could mean that it has been out in the rain a few times, shouldn't be that bad as you can replace these yourself with ease. Finding rust on a chain is a different story, don't touch the thing and just walk away from it.
