Which 40"/42" TV for £499?

My first post, so go easy on me!

I've seen the following two TV's selling for £499 new, so was thinking of buying one for my new house when I move in.

Is there anyone in the know, who knows what to look out for? Which is the better TV, which has a better picture, which would last longer etc etc

Also, is there any better TV's around for similar money!?

They are

Sony 40" Freeview HD Ready LCD TV KDL40U3000U

Up to 7000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
1366 x 768 resolution
Dolby virtual
HDMI x 2
Twin Cart Sockets

Optional Extended Warranty (3 years from purchase) £79.99

AND

Philips 42" Freeview HD Ready Plasma TV 42PFP5532D

1500 CD/M, 15000:1 contrast ratio
1024 x 768 WXGA resolution
Pixel Plus HD
3ms response time
Twin HDMI

Optional Extended Warranty (3 years from purchase) £199.99

Thanks for your help...

Damn, I've just realised I'll have to put VAT on these, so the price would actually be £586

Anyone?

I've just seen this 42" plasma LG, which also seems like a good deal for £570

Or...this 50" plasma LG for £703

It's an offer that Makro are doing soon. My parents have been sent some money off vouchers to bring it down to that price.

However, you have to put the VAT on top of that, which brings it out at £586, but I still haven't seen many 40"/42" TV's around for that price.

i have just brought the philips one and its fantastic!the sound quality is superb and the picture response is very good(no lagging or ghosting)

Go for the Sony, the Philips isn't recommended. Although it's entirely dependent on if you're using HD or SD sources mostly.

so that price you have quoted for the sony at makro hasnt happened yet ??

Its just that you had said you had 'seen' these selling for that price ....

Is the money off vouchers just like the booklet that you get with special offers in or have you got a gift card or credit note or something because that price seems either like a mistake or its the best deal ever on a 40" sony KDL40U3000U Lcd !!

The next best price i've seen for the sony is £714 !! ....... at £586 all i can say ........BUY ONE !!!!! If that deal is correct then it should be posted on hot deals for sure ......

It's a special offers booklet, posted through the letterbox as my parents have a Makro card. The guy who used to live in my house had one posted through as well, so I guess it's anyone who has a Makro account.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think you might need to have a VAT registered business to get a card? Although, I'm sure a lot of people know someone who might have one.

The voucher is valid from 31/10/07 - 6/11/07 for the Sony, and is for £100 off the normal sell price of £599.99 = £499.99 (+ VAT)

The Philips voucher is valid from 21/11/07 - 30/11/07 for £150 off the normal sell price of £649.99 = £499.99 (+ VAT)

Hopefully they'll have them on display down there, so I can see which one to go for, as I've had mixed reviews for both.

@ eldre could you scan and post the front of the booklet and also the offer pages.
was at makro belfast tonight and desk knows nothing about this offer (doesnt surprise me)so if i have something in my hand i may get lucky

also do you actually need the booklet to get the offer or was this just saying the offer was comming?
#14
its the makro mail-just a mailshot catalogue that tells you of upcoming deals

Yes, I'm pretty sure you need the booklet to get the offer, so it would be a case of getting someone you know with a Makro card to get if for you.

Here they are anyway...(I've blanked out the code on the front!)

the philips with daughters 10% staff discount is roughly same price at currys, but its the sony im interested in, the information im getting is that this version is new only released this month. does anyone have any info on this set?

I went to my local Comet today to check out the TV's.

They didn't have the Sony, but they had the Philips.

I was standing about a metre away, and it looked quite "pixelly" compared to the one next to it (I can't remember what it was, an LG possibly) however, standing a couple of foot back I was really impressed with it. It would be fine for my front room for what I'd use it for.

I'm going to go look in a larger Comet & Currys this weekend, to see how they all compare, and then make my decision on what to go for.

currys has it for £649 and dixons has it for £669 both with free delivery. there is a code for 5% for currys and a code for £25 off with dixons cant be bothered to do the maths as me daughter gets 10% off as a currys employee, but im still interested in the sony makro now say to call to desk next wed. as thats the day (apparently) when such things (discount booklets)are available
