We've used AVG Free in the past and also Kaspersky on another machine - which seems to do the job too.

Avast! free here. Definitely doesn't slow my old laptop down like AVG did. :-)

Make sure you remove the Norton thoroughly using their removal tool if necessary (not sure if removal can get as messy as it used to).

Check av-comparatives if you want some test statistics. I went with MSE after a long spell of getting only false positives with the very highly regarded protection of Avira. Your needs may be different.

Indeed there is high risk and low risk but no risk free. Would prefer to have a clean up-to-date backup in place if a nasty arrives than have to deal with removing it.
On my high risk sister's machine I installed Sandboxie; coincidence or not, no problems since (touch wood).

I've been using Avira for years now on PC's & laptops on my own gear as well as the ones at work. Very good it is too . It auto updates itself every morning .As soon as you put a pen/flash drive into the USB port it scans it and notifys you instantly if there is any virus's .It's another free one too.

Sounds as though you didn;t get rid of Norton fully. Did you use a Norton removal tool like this?

I am unsure of your setup but, aside from MSE, do you have a firewall on your router and/or laptop? If you are on a wireless network, then that's another basket of security you may want to consider.

How do I know it was a virus? lol because I'm not stupid. It was the Vista Home Security 2011 virus, and each time it happened she was on her facebook. I saw it happen the second time. A LOT of viruses are got on computers without going near porn.
