I'm talking about for web browsing, office work, 1080p YouTube videos and films. Not gaming. :)

PS: I'm talking about 1920x1200 vs 1920x1080 resolutions.

I prefer 16:10 as you more space for an equivalent screen. 16:10 used to be commonplace on PC but phased out as 16:9 was cheaper to make. I think its personal preference though.

Agree that it is personal choice, used to use a 16:10 but upgraded to an IPS 16:9, didn't really think much about it at the time, but recently had to switch back while the 16:9 was repaired, and it was horrible. So my vote 16:9, everything just seamed to fit better. Maybe just me though!.

For me it depends. I prefer 1920x1200 but above that it doesn't matter to me so 2560x1440 is fine. At lower resolutions I'd take 1280x1024 over 1280x800 or 1280x720 any day.

Its all down to personal choice I guess.

My personal thoughts and ramblings for you TF... (typing for the second time, my net dropped out grr)

My TV is 16:9, my laptop is 16:9, my camera is 16:9 and my phone is 16:9. Why would I want to complicate things by adding 16:10 to the mix? It's nice that photos and videos are easily transferable between all four devices and can be viewed without black borders.

An alternative opinion:

http://www.bit-tech.net/blog/2012/10/22/16-10-vs-16-9-the-monitor-aspect-ratio/

16:10 screens look much bigger than 16:9 screens, of the same size in inches. This means also that on webpages, you have to scroll down less. Anything that reduces finger fatigue is good.

I don't enjoy looking at 16:10 as much as I enjoy looking at 16:9. However screen size and shape seems to change with fashion, like the shape that is considered ideal for a photograph. 16:10 might well be the fashion of tomorrow, then I will be back watching things with black bars again, I don't know.

So in summary, I would say for office work and web browser, 16:10 wins. For watching YouTube and films, 16:9 wins.

For me, work, web browsing etc. is handled by a Dell 16:10. I like the little bit extra height which it gives you.

Gaming and films should be done on either 16:9 or 21:9 if you can afford it. I use 16:9 because I'm not sure whether all games I play support 21:9. Plus, it's quite pricey to buy one of those size screens. Films do look good on 21:9 but you need software to scale the film to the size of the screen.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution
It's like people already said, cheaper to make the panels the same size as the standard TV format. Also I read somewhere that 16:10 or 8:5 format is a cast off of the old 1024x768 4:3 and something to do with the way web pages fitted on the screen before everything went dynamic or more likely something to do with windows applications window sizing.

Weird that 2K & 4K is 17:9 though.

How come? :)

I could get a 21:9 monitor, but it wouldn't be good for web browsing, office work etc. It would have to be used just for films then.

Vertical resolution. I hate scrolling! Most online stuff is optimised for 1024 or 1280 wide anyway.
