Which console for newbie - PS4 or XBOX One?

Hi everyone.
Hubby isn't a serious gamer at all but fancies treating himself to a new console and a few games - but we don't know which one to go for!

We already have a PS3 which we don't really use for games, though we do have few old ones - we mainly use it to watch Blurays and movies off USB drive.
Xbox we have no clue about whatsoever, but I was swaying more towards the PS4 on the assumption that we can use our PS3 games on it also, is that correct?
Hubby just wants to play online with his friends, such as GTA5 and maybe COD or similar kind of games.

Please could anyone give me some quick points what each console does? Do they both play Blurays and movies off USB?

Thanks x

"Hubby just wants to play online with his friends, such as GTA5 and maybe COD or similar kind of games."

per your above statement he will just need to buy whatever his friends have as currently each console can only play the same console online. So get him to find out what they have and bobs your uncle.

From my own personal standpoint owning a ps3, xbox 360 and Xbox one and being neutral on both franchises I would recommend he just stick with the PS3 or the Xbox 360, there is a great back catalogue of games, the consoles are cheap, you can play from USB, decent media devices. If you go for the xbox one or ps4, by the time you buy the console, battery charger, 2 games, years online subscription etc, you are probably talking about 4-500 pounds for a casual gamer, also there is not a tremendous catalogue of games at the moment.

Probably a good time to buy would be January or xmas sales if you are keen as there are a few games being released in Quarter3/4 of '14 which look pretty good.

Anyway the key point, and the only one that matters per your original post is for him to own the same console as his friends or he wont be online gaming with them.

You cant use ps3 games on a ps4. If he doesnt use the ps3 for gaming, whats the point of paying hundreds of pounds on another console? Id say use the one he has if he wants to play games imo.

Which console does his friends have would be the best to go for... they both play blu rays and ps3 games won't work on the ps4..

So other than minor differences they are very similar.. Really boils down to which his friends have (if he wants to play online with them) and which has the games you'd prefer

Just a little heads up.

Ps4 doesn't play ps3 games
Xbox one also doesn't play xbox 360 games

ps4 requires a paid subscription to play online (not in all games) this is PS+

Xbox one requires a subscription to play online (unsure if all games) this is called xbox live (gold).

It's then down to what he prefers if he actually plays the console.

I wouldn't buy a new console if he doesn't use the current one. There isn't enough titles out for the ps4 or xbox one (other than titan fall) that makes the next gen worth it. Watch dogs is a good game but is down to opinion and is available on last gen consoles to.

But if you're being given a new console I'd say like the rest. Find out what his friends are getting or already have. Then go from there.

Also gta 5 isn't out for ps4 or xbox one yet. Believe it's an end of the year release.

Also neither run movies off USB so you will want to keep your ps3 for that.

Thanks so much everyone, it definitely looks like it's not worth him getting a new gen console then - his friends have all been playing GTA5 online together, I think it must be on PS3 if it hasn't been released on PS4 yet, so he's just going to go buy the game for our PS3 instead :)

On another thread someone told me that you don't need PS+ to play GTA5 online which will be even better :D
