A question for MikeT

Hi, I am new to this forum have been looking for a new PC, since I have come back from travelling the world.

I have taken a lot of video footage of my travels and am looking to transfer these to DVD for showing friends and family.

I was wondering if you can recommend a Dell PC, that would be good for converting avi's, mpegs to DVD & general web surfing, putting CD's etc on my iPod.

Thanks in advance.

is it only a Dell you'll consider?

Grab yourself one of these systems, upgrade the graphics to 256MB nVidia® GeForce® 7300 Turbocache graphics card (add £47.00) to bring the pre vat amount to over £400 and then buy via Quidco and get the £25 discount and 4.5% cashback too making the whole deal come to £431.12 delivered after cashback. So your getting the advertised kit then with an almost free graphics card as well that will do all you need it to do.

IMO you are going to require a good graphics card and lots of Ram for video editing so this would meet those demands

free 5-8 day delivery and 3% quidco cashback

I'd recommend a widescreen monitor...there are two current HOT DEALS that would suit..I'll look for the links

I'd go for this monitor .it has a DVI input.

not sure if this is still available

has a relatively poor graphics card compared with the gateway and a standard monitor.

Would this be plenty powerful/quick enough to do what I want it to do!

Thanks in advance

Editing video is more about the transcoding ability of the cpu, I can transfer via firewire to a plain base level Dell 6400 laptop with on board video an hour of video and transcode it fine with a 1.6coreduo cpu then burn it to dvd. The video part only has to be able to show the frames or play it just like a dvd would be played.
If your just doing your hoiliday footage then more or less any modern cpu with on board graphics will be fine, its not like its for your livelyhood and it needs doing in 10mins flat is it?

sorry the DELL or GATEWAY?....deffo the latter...which would be my preference because of the superior graphics...however I'm sure the Dell is up to the task as it has 2gb of RAM

It's not bad but the CPU is nowhere near the spec of the Dell and Gateway,,,,it's really a case of whether the extra expenditure will be worth it and only you can decide that...just to bring things into context the extra 1gb of ram is worth about £50..a 7600 card is worth at least £40 over a 7300...the better CPU on the Dell and Gateway are at least £40 worth..probably more for the 4600 AMD on the gateway.

you'll get 2% quidco from play.com.
