Fallout 4 is open world, if you haven't played.

Far Cry 4?

The first sort of games are generally known as Adventure games, the second as Open World games.

Cheers for replies. Played most of the newer games like fallout 4 and witcher, looking more for older games or games not so popular?

Point and Clicks similar to Broken Sword and Discworld...I'd really recommend the Monkey Island games, Day of the Tentacle and possibly even the older Indiana Jones adventures.
As for games like Skyrim...Fallout 3 GOTY and Fallout New Vegas? You might even enjoy Shadow of Mordor which is cheap from CDKeys.

Telltale games are worth a look as well - wolf amongst us and The Walking Dead Series would possibly be up your street

Try valiant hearts, amazing point and click-ish adventure game. Broken age and the walking dead games are decent too.
