Hi people,

I have finally shortlisted some laptops.....I need to buy one pretty soon. So now I need your assistance...which one from the following link is the best value for money?

Please if you could let me know as I would really appreciate it.

There's loads on that list!
Avoid Advent, EI Systems and Packard Bell for a start.

What do you want to use it for?
Do you care a lot about weight? (Are you going to be carrying it about a lot?)
What's your budget?
Are you a big games player or movie watcher or Photoshop user - the sorts of things which need good graphics and/or a lot of processing power?

being an IT Techician I always ask :

your budget?
who will be using it?
what will it be used for?
do you know the costs/time involved in upgrading laptop components?

9 times out of 10, we advise our clients/customers to opt for a desktop for one or more reasons (which i'll explain once you reply)

You said you had thought about this laptop

While it is pretty good for the money it is a 17" screen which makes the laptop rather large.

If it is going to sit on the same desk all the time that will not be a problem, but if you are going to be carrying it around a lot it WILL be a problem.

This is why the other two posters have asked how you are going to use it.

Hi there

Its going to be on the desk mainly, not going to be use it much on the go.

Budget is max £400. It needs to have an inbuilt webcam and have 2gb RAM as I think thats the minimum for Vista to run smoothly.

Its for a friend who is a student, so will mainly be used for surfing net, watching the odd film, word processing.

Laptop is preferred as then if he needs to take it into Uni the odd time then he can take it with him.

for the number of times he/she will take it to uni, I wouldnt bother getting a laptop. you can get a much better "desktop" for £400. You can use the PC's at Uni for free

Plus, you cant really upgrade a laptop, where as with a normal PC, the skys the limit. £400 will get you a canny setup including webcam, and dvd software for films.

Ebuyer or the like is ya best bet. Would even go as far a Dell, only because, with Dell, you get the opinion of having Win XP installed, rather than Vista

I am far from an IT genius however after using my Toshiba laptop nearly every day for 3 years this Christmas without a single problem I can really recommend them. I had 2 laptops previously which admittedly were older but weren't a patch on this one, also my mum and a friend have both bought Packard Bells after mine and one has tragically passed away already and I think the other is on its deathbed. Toshiba came out joint top with Sony for laptops in a recent poll.

However... I agree with Disco in that I would be inclined to go for one with XP as I hate Vista more than I can write here!

Sony
Tosh
