If you go for the core you would still need something to save game progress on so you may be better going for premium which comes with hard drive and wireless controller.
To connect to xbox live as well as the wirless network adaptor (£50) you will have to buy a subscription to xbox live (typically 12months for £30). Although if the xbox is near the wireless router just connect it with the network cable and save yourself £50.

I wouldn't rush out and buy one right now - some good xbox deals are regulary posted on the deals thread so if you get a really good deal on a core then you may be able to pick up a hard disk seperately or just wait for a good deal on a premium to come up. If you get one with some free games you could trade in the games into somewhere like Blockbusters for an additional controller or for the Xbox live subscription.

If budget isn't important and image is - then he'll probably want the latest Xbox which is the elite. This is similar to the premium but with a much larger hard disk, has a special port (HDMI) for connecting to high definition TVs and comes in black. (the core and premium can also be connected to HD TVs using a component cable or vga).

If you see a deal posted and you're not sure about it (is it any good, what do I get, what else would I need to buy), just post a question in the thread.
Go for a premium and buy Xbox Live and an official Microsoft Wireless Adaptor.

what sort of price would one of those cost and a microsoft adaptor
Currently about £240-£250 for the premium, £50-£60 for adaptor and £30 for 12 months live subscription.

If your wireless router is in your sons room (or move it there if you have a telephone point in the room) you can just connect the with the network cable. You can get wireless bridges for under £40 (do the same sort of thing as the adaptor) but these take a bit more technical know how.

Toys-r-us were doing the premium for £200 about a month ago. I'd expect the price of the premium to drop from £240 mark as the Elite gets cheaper....

If you're doing a large purchase like this online try and use something like Quidco for some extra cashback
