Whisky Shops - plus single malt recomendations

Hi,

I'm interested in expanding my current whisky collection of about 5 types. MY idea is to buy a decent make every month on pay day.

Does anyone know any decent on-line sites to buy from?

Ones I bought come from The Whisky Shop in York and I know they have an online store, but the postage is a complete rip off - about 8 quid per bottle. I also live 30 miles off York, so not really easy enough for the trip every month. I live in Leeds if that helps and anyone knows a good shop.

Also - does anyone have any recomendations on nice types please? My favourite at the moment is Talisker as I like the peaty taste. As such I recently bought a bottle of Laphroig which is a similar type of taste, but stronger.

Many thanks,

I buy loads from The Drink Shop as my brothers and I like a single malt (I prefer Irish, they Scots stuff). My fave is Tyrconnel after being introduced it on a trip to Ireland. It's not over powering and really smooth.

Lagavulin comes highly recommended for a peaty taste (don't like it myself though):

Most prices are about the same amount but Waitrose have free standard delivery:

I would recommend getting a hold of The Whisky Bible by Jim Murray as it is a great guide. It also gives you info like the whiskies that he swears are over-production by the big names which is bottled as something else and sold much cheaper. If you like Talisker then his guide says that you should get a hold of Macleod's 8yr Single Malt, I did and it is exactly the same as Talisker like he says. It's also only about £14-15 a bottle instead of almost £30 for Talisker!

Here's a good site as much for info as sales, If you are interested in "real" Malts (scotch).

without recommending bottles that will cost you telephone numbers, I would say
Try... Highland Park 12 Year Old, You won't be disapointed

And Yes Talisker is one to enjoy ;-)

The Scotch Malt Whisky society http://www.smws.co.uk/ sounds like the type of thing you are after. Very special whisky, not the type you can buy in shops. They are expensive but are very special.
They have a monthly delivery option if that is what you like and if you live in Edinburgh the society HQ is at The Vaults and you can go there for tastings and very smart, fun evenings. Or visit next time you'e visiting Edinburgh - lovely place.

You could try for one or more of the following supermarket deals:

Tesco
Dalwhinne was £13.99
macallan fine oak £13.99
Laphroig QC £15.48
HP12 at £19.38

the Co-operative
GlenLivet 12 £17.66
GlenFiddich £21.99
And as for a recommendation I like Isle of Jura (and it is not too expensive) or if you like the peaty malts you could try the "Superstition" which is the peaty expression of Isle of Jura.
