Who can put the best gaming PC together for £600?

I am looking to build my own PC to replace my current, and need it for gaming mostly. I have a monitor, keyboard and mouse just need the bits to build the beast itself. 2 gig of ram and a good video card are a necessity but 8800GT is the one I am after as i am happy to play games at 1024*768.

£600 is my budget but am a bit out of touch with the latest and greatest mobo, RAM, etc

buy a good dell and add the card... best hassle free best price you'd get on this budget. I've checked prices before and you can't save much building yourself a system unless you're in the £1k+ area compared to dell.

Althought if you're in London try checking the deals on tottenham court road.

Wierd thread this as I've just embarked on getting the worlds best PC spec together - Obviously peoples minds will differ on whats best but currently Im looking at a complete build for 2,000 which is simply the best.

2 x Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR3 1333MHz Memory CL9(9-9-9-24) DHX Heatsink Lifeti...
1 x Asus STRIKER EXTREME 680I SLI Socket 775 onboard Audio ATX
1 x Samsung 32GB Samsung Solid State Drive 2.5" IDE (PATA)

nickmax1, My suggestion would be: eBuyer = £594 after Google Checkout (ends 5/11/07)

* E6750 = £114 [if overclocking, Arctic Freezer 7 Pro is +£17]
* ASUS P5K AiLifestyle Series iP35 = £70 [inexpensive P35 board & seems to be a good overclocker too]
* OCZ 2GB Platinum XTC = £48
* 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 = £175 [all sold out at the moment!]
* Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB SataII 16Mb = £43 [500Gb is +£20]
* DVD-rewriter drive = £20 [choose what you like]
* Antec Sonata III with 500W EarthWatts PSU = £72
* Vista Premium OEM (32/64-bit) = £62 [XP Home is £52]

I tend to agree with alchemistkevin that Dell could be the best value. But if you go for a separate 8800GT you may have to replace the PSU as well - & this wouldn't make it worthwhile anymore.

modena, you forgot the OS?

Del, similar PC here w/o the solid state drive (150Gb raptor instead). Wonder how much it is? They only sell to trade outlets and resellers.

Are you sure you need a solid state drive which costs around £300 :shock: :o? According to this review (see page 3) it won't offer significant gains to be worth the money in a desktop....

As for replacing a desktop hard drive, the [Samsung 32GB Solid State Drive] is still not offering enough overall performance to be worth the money. Setting up a RAID-0 would give you truly great performance but as you would need to buy a dedicated RAID controller the cost is again massively prohibitive.

I remember hearing about an article a month or two ago where a magazine put together a top-end Alienware spec gaming PC for <£1000, it matched it on benchmarks nicely but I can't find that article anywhere..!

I'm looking to spec a nice complete DX10 gaming system for around that budget, including monitor and OS, and now the 8800GT has arrived it really helps. I'm wondering what this card, and the forthcoming release of the Nvidia G92 range, will do to the 8800GTX price now?

What really sucks is when they advertise a system for £xxx, and it turns out that price is excluding VAT. I looked at that £576 article and went to the website it linked to and the prices didn't seem realistic, and half the products it mentioned didn't appear :(
