you have to activate it and put in your details to top it up

no you won't get charged unless you make a call or text.
There's a possibility a app might use your data so you could turn off mobile data to be sure or connect to a Wi-Fi network

When you say activate and put in details, what is involved? Payment card? Can I choose a different PAYG option to what I had ordered?

you have to go onto myo2 and add card details, I would do a webchat with them, their service is very good.

So the credit is already on the SIM? This is PAYG, O2 can't bill me directly, only deduct credit already loaded.

I basically want to try putting in O2 SIM (it is locked to O2) to receive a call to test audio quality, can I do this without getting charged? If I put in SIM but don't go to myo2 will phone be able to receive calls but not make calls and data? That's what I want, without loading any credit just yet.

put in a tesco or giffgaff sim, they both work on O2 locked phones as they use the O2 network. You can then call the phone without topping up.

not sure, cant harm putting the sim in and calling the number on the phone, will only tell you its not activated if it needs activating first.
