Do you really want Win 7 as its no longer supported ,I would make the switch to Win 10 . Are you wanting to put your old parts into a similar machine?

Windows 7 IS still supported. however I think it makes sense to get a machine with Windows 10 on it if all you do is emails, word documents and watching films.

It is very easy to make Windows 10 look like Windows 7.

You don't really need an i5 for what you're doing. One of the ultra low power chips will give you fantastic battery life and adequate performance with an SSD.

As stated windows 7 is still supported till 2020. Maybe they don't want all the spying that comes with 10. I know I don't. And before you say you can turn it's off.... You can... Just before Microsoft turn it all back on again.

windows 7 doesn't support the latest range of processors so before you buy anything make sure you're buying something old enough to work with your 8yr old OS

Pretty sure they have backported the same telemetry from W10 to Windows 8 and 7, so it is not necessarily any more 'secure' in that respect.

Windows 7 IS still supported.

It's still getting security patches but not feature updates so it doesn't support several aspects of modern hardware. The security patches cease in two and a half years time though, so it's not ideal for a brand new machine that you expect to last longer than that.

As you say, Windows 10 is hardly any different so it doesn't make any sense to hang on to windows 7 for 'ease of use'.

Any reason your sticking with Windows, your usage doesn't seem to require Windows only, word docs you can do using word online from any OS.

Reason i stayed with win 7 is that its simplified use , I tried 8 before but just found it annoying with all the tiles etc I just wanted the basic main screen with all my folders on it so everything was only a click away , the security issues or support didn't bother me for what I was using it for , want something with long battery life and around 10" screen that's light easy for travel and must have a keyboard
Was looking at the surface pro but don't know enough about the different types
Also HP is a big no had one before and it broke my heart with lots of issues

Use classic shell. It makes win8/10 look and feel like win7.

Have you looked into Android?
If all as you are doing is email, basic word documents and watching videos then a full Windows tablet with an i5 seems like massive overkill.

I would try and find a Surface 3, the Z8700 processor would be perfectly capable for your usage.

Thanks everyone, the surface 3 what operating system does it use
