My boyfriend proposed to me at the week so now we need to find somewhere to get married!

I would like to get married outdoors and have a woodland / enchanted forest theme and have a more laid back meal like a BBQ or big hog roast rather than a stuffy 3 course meal.

Does anyone know of somewhere fairly cheap in scotland or nothern england that this can be done? Or know of a big self catering house that they are happy for a marquee to go up in their lawn.

Any help would be great and rep will be added! And any ideas on the woodland theme would be great too!

National Trust for Scotland would be a good start
Heaps of castles and grand houses with woods. Also happy to have weddings using their facilities. I know they allow marquees/bbq's at Castle Fraser near Aberdeen, but I think most allow it

Oh and Congratulations. Hope you have a lovely day

Congratulations - and given the areas you suggested - the Gretna Green area can cater for most wedding ideas given its history and association with weddings.

Best place to start may be the registrars office and get a list of all the places with the license already

Congratulations, We had our wedding in a walled garden in Suffolk with a bbq and it was perfect. I worked in big hotels and would not have swopped my perfect day for any of the huge fancy ones.

There's some beautiful spots along the Esk river. In fact, possibly the perfect spot might be in Rosslyn. If you look EH25 9PU up in Google Maps, that'll take you to Rosslyn chapel, and if you go South of that, once you get past the trees, there's a fairly large clearing, with the Esk river running in a U shape around it. I haven't been to that particular patch myself (I tend to head off into the woods for a walk and generally get lost for a few hours, not entirely unintentionally), but the woodland surrounding the river and pretty much every spot along the river itself is great, especially during the later stages of the summer.

Congratulations!! Following on from the National Trust theme, think many of them, especially in the current climate where they are looking to close various locations, would allow use of their grounds. Leith Hall near Huntly is another loverly NTS location. Enjoy.
