I was thinking of getting a pennine press as that has a lid but I'm also thinking maybe a microwave with grill as its like £20 difference between that and the press.

I have never used a microwave in my life btw.

Microwaves work on the principle that every item has some amount of moisture. Those moisture molecules (water) are excited thus making food hot. From experience bread, pastries and chips usually come out soggy.

Have you looked at a minioven?

Dont need one I have a gas cooker but the door opens downward so to use the grill I have to have the door open and I have a 6 year old running about (who is obsessed with eating buttered toast).

Teach your boy not to run about when the oven door is open!

I have a microwave but it only ever gets used to defrost or to do porridge sachets.

A mini oven is know in the US as a toaster oven (because it makes great toast), it sits on the counter and has a grill.

Due to their size you can clean them out and as it's table top he isn't going to run into it.

The grill functionality on a microwave is terrible, so I wouldn't buy a microwave just for grilling, but for reheating food they are great.

wouldnt 6year old benefit from something healthier than bread and butter?

I would prefer a minioven for grilling than microwave. They are same size roughly.

So is this primarily to grill things? Or just to cook things?

There are microwaves that have a bake/cook feature. I've used mine to roast a chicken a few times - first time was brilliant, second time it could have been better but then that may be because I didn't prepare it very well the second time.

I have a microwave with the grill element at the top, but it is awful. Really smokey and smells weird.
The best grill gadget i've had is a halogen oven. Sits on the countertop, instant heat and grills cleaner and faster than my oven.

had two mickeys with grills and the grill function has always been terrible

I have the a microwave which is mostly used for reheating cold food or making warm milk
I have an oven which isnt great but the Landlord wont replace it
I have a 4 slice toaster which we use about once a week
I have a Tefal halogen oven which is absolutely brilliant and we use it nearly every day, not tried toast in it but dont see why it shouldnt cook, used it for fishfingers, chips, sausage, roaster, etc. etc.

An alternative is to butter the bread a fry it in a frying pan that's what we do camping.

A microwave is a very useful appliance in any kitchen. The convenience alone is worth it.

Instead of heating up leftovers in the oven/pan you can just fling it in the microwave for 1 minute and it's done. Or if you wanna quickly cook some scrambled eggs, porridge, defrost etc - simples.

Buy a combination microwave - that way you can use it as an oven if you don't fancy using your actual oven, or don't have the space. I'd get a large microwave, that way everything can fit in and you don't need to buy new stuff.

But that fried bread and not toast :)

Op just bite the bullet and get a toaster, if you go for a panini press get a George Forman does the same thing but also lots more.

Don't leave an oven door open unattended, or keep an eye on the kid, would make more sense.

Having never used a microwave I have no idea what I would do with one, that mini oven looks intriguing tho and may be useful for Christmas and things as the gas cooker in this place is a very cheap one that only has room for 1 tray at a time.

Gonna look into the mini oven if grills on microwaves suck

Never had a cat so never needed a microwave :-)

Put a PIR sensor in the microwave and a mouse flap, this sorts your vermin out.

What's wrong with toasters?

He's worried that his previous mouse infestion might of been using it as a toilet. I've never heard of this but it's possible I guess.
