If anyone has bought an xbox one for themselves/kids xmas word of advice when you initially turn it on does a sizeable 4.2 gb download.

I got mine out of the box to check everything was ok after a big PS3 download at christmas few years ago, glad I did.

Currently at 21% after half an hour, with a reasonable internet connection. Could be here a while...

To avoid abit of christmas upset get the xbox on tonight/tomorrow so when the kids get it it should be relatively plan sailing.

Happy Christmas!

And install any games you have bought to go with it else it can be hours waiting to just install the game before playing it.

if it's new then almost certainly, any xbox one would need significant time to download programs and any games you may have bought for it. so like the op and others have said, if you can do, get it done now, save those rugrats complaining their bored of it loading whilst you're peeling the veg.

Yes - The one I bought is an old model Xbox. The OS download is probably the same.

Still to get the games downloads running too, beats assembling dolls houses I guess.

Thanks Op by the way for the heads up...husband looks fed at the prospect setting this up tonight but we have terrible broadband out in the sticks so better to try now
Merry Christmas and if anyone knows about how we might fare with the regular Xbox 500gb we've bought I'd appreciate it

Yeah...or to build the millennium falcon and the imperial star destroyer like the husband had to the other year!

I only had the patience to download the initial update on the Xbox one S and 1 of the games that I'd thought would be wanted to be played the most. Chose to buy skylanders imaginators for the Wii U over the Xbox though just for ease of play.

4.2 GB is nothing

Was the skylanders update a long one? Wrapped that one and thinking now if I'll need to unwrap and install?

I bought it for the Wii U but seems a lot quicker for any game on the Wii U which is why I didn't buy it for the Xbox. The Xbox One S console seems to be soo slow at downloading regardless of broadband speed even when downloading directly from the cd itself. It took about 4 hours to download overwatch on the Xbox which is ridiculous I wrote a post on here about it as I feel it is broken or something. My xbox one elite console downloaded Witcher 3 GOTY edition 40gb in less than an hour...

Remember there are 30+ free games on the Xbox store for anyone in need of games to build up a collection.

As a tip if you have the same problem as me. I read online that there is a glitch where the download speeds lock at really low speeds if you chose "instant on" setting when choosing the option on switching the console on and setting it up. This mode seems to lock speeds at around 6mb/s but downloads slower. If you switch the setting to "energy saver" mode it doesn't lock at the lower speeds immediately. However when it switches to a darkened screen (screensaver) it will lock at lower speeds again needing a restart. Very frustrating but definitely worked considerably faster on energy saver mode for downloads.

Top tip:- turn it on for the first time, set up internet connection and download the necessary updates. Disconnect from the internet then install the games from disk and then finally re-connect to the internet and download the game updates, otherwise, the games will initialise and then download the game from the Xbox servers which will take hours per game.

most games let you at some part usuallu before its fully installed. Either online part or offline part.

If that works, and I'll see, thats genius.

Seriously ladies and gents get yourself a 12 month sub to EA Access as well, that and Games with Gold, mean I never need to buy another game for Xbox, at £20 a year it will give your dustbin lids a large selection of games to play out of the gate.

You'll also be able to get hammered by them on Star Wars Battlefront, FIFA, Madden, NBA, etc, to name a few. Plus they have started adding games from Xbox 360, such as Mass Effect Trilogy, etc, has to be done.

Although PS4 is my platform of choice, Xbox has really got it's act together and is well worth the coin just for these two subscriptions.

You do not need the gold membership. Just go to the store page on your Xbox where there are categories from New Releases to Top Paid For Games etc. Scroll down and you will come across Free to Play Games where you can download as many as you like. Some of the best ones to try are...
Neverwinter
World of Tanks
Gigantic
AirMech Arena
Roblox
Hawken
Star Trek Online
Battle Islands
Trove
Gems of War
Warframe
APB Reloaded
Happy Dungeons
Happy Wars
DC Universe Online
Smite
Prominence Poker

In all fairness, he is correct. 4.2 Th is relatively nothing compared to some game patches. That said, I had to take in 2 family members Xboxes and update them on my BT infinity. They were getting 4 Mbps on their own connections, and the operating system update was taking ages, nevermind the installation of fifa 17 via digital download. I'm lucky to get a good 40-50 Mbps wirelessly (faster via Ethernet) so got the machines updated much faster than they could. Still took a few hours, though. Probably would have taken 24 hours for them.

Good tip though, OP. Nice one.

Our choose to defer the patch and just install the game first, then the patch later.

A recent update has improved matters. Also I have seen an increase in the past by using Google's DNS and not BT. (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) not sure of this still works as effectively but may be worth a go.

Those are the monthly free games you are thinking of. These ones in the store are free to everyone all the time. They are nothing special but some of them are fun and some make their money by offering add-ons for people wanting to experience more in the game.
