Purchased an Xbox one last month and when setting up my username I stupidly added my full name as it was available at the time.

After playing online for a while I've realised that this isn't the normal thing....

1. Is putting your full name dangerous
2. Would just a surname or first name be safe
3. Have you any ideas for a username

Thanks in advance :-D

Personally I wouldn't use my full name on any platform.

Change that asap, it will cost you though, tenner I believe.

Like Benjammin316 says, I suspect it's going to cost you. I've a feeling it's about £8.

I set a new account up for my son before last Christmas, but made the mistake of choosing a name rather than accepting an auto-generated one. That meant I had to pay when he wanted to change it on/after Christmas Day.
If I'd gone with an auto-generated one, I'd have been able to change it once for free.

4.
Once you find an available gamertag, click Claim it .
Note If your gamertag was created for you when you initially signed up for Xbox (meaning you did not choose it yourself), you can change it once for free. Additional Xbox gamertag changes cost extra.
If you created your own gamertag at sign-up and want to change it, you will be charged (fee varies by region and currency).

Good luck.

You normally have to pay however if you contact Microsoft with a sob story perhaps they will let you change for free this once.

The charge will just be to discourage frequent voluntary name changes, usually a game or game service's support service will change it for free if there's a solid reason to.

This case is borderline and you'd have to ask them.

As for security implications, there probably aren't that many in practice. I suspect most people aren't careful enough to keep their usual username separated from their real name.

As for a username, pick whatever you fancy. You probably want to stay away from anything that contains words that might be inappropriate for some games (e.g. Murder) but beyond that it's really whatever's meaningful for you.

I don't see what the problem is. Why is it any riskier than using your name in everyday life?

Agreed, why does everyone feel the need to hide behind a pseudonym?

There's a lot of messed up people about.

Kill someone too many times in cod, they get your name. Get on Facebook, find you. Etc.

Not worth it.

Was onto Xbox support chat, they're escalating the case and they'll make a decision in 72 hours whether or not to grant a free name change :D better safe than sorry and my username was literally "firstname middle initial surname" oO
