If it's for games - 360
If it's for affordability - 360

If it's for Blu-Ray - PS3.

Unless you hunt down one of the older PS3s, you won't get any backward compatibility with PS2 games.

The 60Gb PS3 that was available last Christmas DID allow you to play PS2 games.

All the current PS3's do NOT allow you to play PS2 games.

You may be able to pick up a 60Gb PS3 second hand.

Id defo recommend the 360 more games to chose from, cheaper, and in my opinion better, ive had both and kepted my ps3 for a week and sold it

check to see what their mates are playing on so they can lend / swap / play games with them

When they play current games for the 360 or PS3, I doubt very much if they will be interested for long with their PS2 games.

Like other replies, if its for selection of games and (COD4 Rocks Baby!)...had to get that in...then the 360 is the console to have. The only thing it doesnt have is Blue-Ray (although rumours are flying around that there are deals in the making to release a BlueRay player for the 360) and free online play (you have to pay circa £30 per year for that but its well worth it).

PS3 has BlueRay and free online play, however I dont know how popular or stable the online play is compared to 360..personally I've rarely had problems with online play on my 360.

IMO, 360 is the console to go for.

Thanks all for your input, look like it will have to be the 360.

I'd have both if I had the money, but I don't. Not many people do unless you want to buy me one!

Bumped into a mate in town today who was taking his 4th 360 back to gamestation dj
ue to RROD. Luckily my 360 has only been sent off once for repair since launch and hopefully it lasts a while.

I also have a PS3 for the games that are not being released on the 360 like Gran Turismo , uncharted and little big planet (once Sony pull their finger out)

The only other thing i would consider is playing online. Your boys will probably want to play against friends online so it may be best to know what consoles their frineds have. If all their friends have the same console may be best to get that type.

I have all 3 consoles (360,PS3,Wii) have 5 kids (3 girls 2 boys) & they mostly play
Girls = mostly wii but 360 now & again
Boys = Mostly 360 but PS3 now & again
Most of their friends have a wii or 360 so would go for a 360 as more games & friends
will mostly have or get 360.

i have all three consoles and i think if you can afford it you should 100% of the time get a ps3.

xbox

pro

lots of cheap games
best on line
best on line store
cheap console to get started on nextgen gaming
best exclusive games (forza, halo, fable, banjo, viva pinata, gears 1 &2, mass effect, braid, geometry, pgr) http://www.metacritic.com/games/xbox360/scores/
chippable

con

i find my recently purchased xbox360 noisy as hell compared to my other consoles - even my wife complains about the noise
xbox reliability still an issue..
20 pounds tax a year to play online
upgrading hard drive costs a lot
expensive wifi adapter
personally (IMHO) i think lthe xbox feels cheap and abit tacky

the xbox is worst for hidden costs.

ps3

pro

blu-ray
free online
built in wifi
has builtin internet browser which supports flash 9 (youtube, veoh etc) internet a lot faster since 2.5 firmware
supports standard usb wifi keyboards and bluetooth headsets
best exclusive games (golf, gt5 prologue, uncharted, lbp, resistance, motorstorm, ratchet, wipeout, singstar) http://www.metacritic.com/games/ps3/scores/
playtv
links up with psp to have remote access to your playtv/divx/music/certain remote access enabled ps3 games collection

cons

online not as good as xbox
games library not as big
high initial cost
controller not as good as xbox

personally if money isn't such an issue then the ps3 is much better than an xbox. in the long run it will also cost you less because online gaming is free and all the peripherals are cheaper with the ps3.. there are more good games on the ps3 than practically anyone can afford so to say the ps3 has no games is a bit unrealistic and silly

if you don't have a lot of money get the xbox.. and if you are really low in cash get it chipped

Just ordered two xbox's with the 60gb hdd, £169.98 with 2 games from gamestation.

ps3 evey time, afta my 3rd xbox 360 broke in 2years i decided enuf was enuf and got a ps3 only regret is that i didnt do it sooner, its a awesome piece of kit and for people saying for value i disagree how much is a decent sized hard drive for 360 gonna cost? a blu ray player? a wireless wifi connection? a years subscribtion online? u get all this included in the ps3 online is free id choose ps3 Personally, because I want my console to work, the 360 fails with it’s nightmare red rings of death in normal conditions, and well, the PS3 can’t be killed under even the most extreme gaming conditions.360 is now using a lost HD format, while PS3 comes loaded with Blu-ray, and a whole lot more cool stuff.

Got a 60GB PS3 a few weeks ago based on the fact that my friend plays online - it's awesome.

PS3 is expensive (unless you find one cheaply on eBay like I did!) but quieter and there are lots of extras... depends what you're looking for...

If you want/need wifi, BluRay, bluetooth, SINGSTAR, free online play, HDD (upgradable) or your friends are playing PS3 then go for it... I'm gonna get an XBOX too...

To most people on here the 360 will have 2 major factors going for it, namely Live and unofficial dvd drive firmware.

The earlier consoles are seriously flakey, and definitely shouldn't be given to kids. The falcons and newer models are a lot more reliable but are still noisy.

The PS3 is a solid machine but suffers from a truly awful exclusive catalogue (which doesn't look set to improve much anytime soon) and the overall cruminess of PSN. It is a machine which can genuinely rely on though which is certainly a first for a Sony home console.

A truly awful exclusive catalogue, Myth, the 2 highest rated exclusive titles of the past 12 months have been ps3 titles.
And when i say exclusive i mean exclusive and not also available on pc..
Top 10 rated games on either console c/o metacritic:
PS3
1 Grand Theft Auto IV 98 2 LittleBigPlanet 95 3 BioShock 95 4 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 94 5 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 94 6 Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The 93 7 Rock Band 92 8 NHL 09 89 9 Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction 89 10 Orange Box, The 89

360

1 Grand Theft Auto IV 98 2 BioShock 96 3 Orange Box, The 96 4 Gears of War (available on PC) 94 5 Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The 94 6 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 94 7 Halo 3 94 8 Braid (coming to PC) 93 9 Rock Band 2 (available on import for PS3) 92 10 Guitar Hero II 92

As you can see the 360s is hardly brimming with "exclusive" titles and even those console exclusive titles are well over a year old...

Oh FFS, just look at this year's Christmas line up, the PS3 has Resistance 2 and the 360 has GOW2, it doesn't take a genius to work out which one will be the superior game.

I'm not a fanboy by any stretch of the imagination, I have both machines, it's just that the PS3 doesn't really have a lot going for it at the moment apart from it's build quality, even the multiformat games which have been launched on both consoles this Winter have proven to be inferior on the PS3, it's the online functionality which really lets it down though.
