XBox softmod parts

As many people here bought an Xbox from Argos deal, I decided to open this thread to discuss where to gear cheapest softmod components from.

What is needed (I haven't done softmod myself as yet, so I could be wrong):

1. Splinter Cell game (1.99 used at Gamestation + 1 quid delivery)
2. Xbox DVD media remote (not required but nice to have) - 4.99 each @ Woolworths (Seems to be out of stock now!) + 1.50 delivery or 4.67 @ Filron (delivery rate unknown).
3. Memory card or USB to Xbox cable. Good price anyone?

I got Splinter Cell for £3.99 pre-owned from Game. Be sure to get the non-classic version (although I think Classic may work also??)

I got a USB to Xbox cable from here for £4.99: netpcdirect.co.uk

But I couldn't get the save game loaded over so I've ordered an action replay from Amazon reseller for £9.99 (£12 inc P&P).

Thanks for the DVD remote link, will order that. Are there any cheap/ decent wireless pad offers about?
#2
Action Replay is 6.99 delivered from Amazon Marketplace. Not sure if this is any good though :)
#3
D'oh must have missed that!

Edit £4.99 now from the same company I ordered for £9.99 from! :x
#4
I only found it by using search facility on Amazon :) It is 4.99 + 2 quid delivery from seller called direct4games.
#5
I think the remotes from woolies are out of stock
#6
Thanks, blackster. Posting changed.
#7
Kommunist - Yup I ordered from them 2 days ago for £9.99! What a jip ;)

blackster - think that maybe dependant upon your location - I ordered (Manchester) a couple of hours ago and it's pending despatch.

I think some PC world stores have 99p Splinter Cells left for collection. Pop in and ask them to check the store room!?!

After Woollies remote fiasco, need to search for DVD remote again. Filron got it for 4.67 and 3.50 delivery charge. However, I am not so confident buying from Filron as I never came across this company before. I tried to call'em several times yesterday and today and no one answered the phone...

So, DVD remote anyone? Don't care if it is original or 3rd party ones, as long as it is works :)

dont forget guys, you need a way to transfer the hacked save to the memory card.
DONT under any circumstances get an action replay, it currupts the save.

stick with a trust usb-xbox lead, and a flash drive.

Can anyone point me in the direction of what to do once you've bought all the bits to softmod the xbox. Is there already a post in a thread? I've had a look but not come up with anything. If it's on another forum, please could you PM me the details and not put it on here as a post.

Thanks all:)

Anybody need a softmod kit ? I have one for sale. PM me if so.

You can actually do it another free way. Did mine this way, might not be suitable for the not so technical lot though as it involves hotswapping your xbox with your pc.

Also I cant stress this enough make sure you back up your eeprom.

You still need hardware to do the softmod ie: xBox controller port to usb converter and a pen drive
#16
Not with the Ndure exploit you dont, just need to burn a couple of cds.

I have researched soft modding to death, and to my knowledge, even ndure is not doable without hardware. The NDure discs might install the new dashboard, but to get a copied disc to work you have to soft mod it first.

You can pick up a USB to Xbox converter lead from ebay (buy it now, brand new) for about £3. Splinter Cell from Game for £1 last time I checked. Also - definately buy a CROSSOVER ethernet cable to connect to your pc (I got mine £2 delivered from ebay) - then download CuteFTP software for free. Once modded, you can then easily get stuff onto and off of your xbox (including games  ).

If using a flashdrive rather than memory card to get the save game exploit onto the harddrive - remember this:
1/ Not ALL flash drives are compatible, gather a few from friends etc. (I had 4 to play with and only one worked - a kingston drive).
2/ You have to edit the driver of the flash card for the PC (and ActionReplay software) to recognise it once you have formatted it in the Xbox. This is simple, just download a relevant guide from the net. Believe me, when it all works out, the wave of satisfaction and reward is awesome. And once you get XBMC up and running, you'll be drooling.

PS I also bought an 80gb harddrive from ebay for £17.50 (was a luckily low buy it now private sale, they still happen occasionally). With the crossover cable, downloading/uploading anything across is a breeze. I havent used the dvd tray for a while!

Rabbitmoon:

Your right. I used a flash drive with a converter to load the savegame exploit onto the xBox.

I've also chipped another xBox and installed a 320g hard drive :-).

ipunk: I suggest you use google again as your wrong in your assumption ;-)

You mentioned nothing about hot swapping in your original replay.

Go google again and tell me you can hot swap WITHOUT anything extra other than the Ndure CD. :p

Theres an easier way to softmod an xbox than the one you are attempting, and i have the ingrediants, these are:
James Bond For xbox
Xbox Memory Card
USB
Copy the hacked gamesave for james bond onto xbox then onto memory card (so you can redo) load james bond game, load the hacked game save,
then
Install Softmod
Install Evox :) or UnleashX
Done! and the gamesave is on the memory card so you can throw the usb cable away :)

Aye i recommend this method, been softmodding this way for years.
One thing, its very important to get into your xbox through ftp program and backup eeprom and then c: and e: straight away to pc on first boot up of hack before you softmod in case anything goes wrong.Hard disks don`t last forever.
Just take your time and read up on xboxscene and have everything clear in your mind before you start.Loads of guides around, previous softmodding was harder than this.Cheers:thumbsup:

To clear a few things up, no, you cannot use a Classic Splinter Cell, but you can also use one of the Mechwarrior titles i think.

Also, you can make your own Xbox-USB cable very cheaply-buy a USB cable with a female connector at one and, and any unwanted Xbox peripheral with an Xbox controller connection at one end, then lop the cables and solder them together, red to red, black to black etc. You should be left with a lone yellow cable, don't worry about that, it doesn't connect to anything. Then make sure the wires arent touching (tape them up!) and reconnect the shielding. Hey Presto!

Beware though, you can brick your Xbox doing this, but i believe the risk to be worth the reward.

Your first app should be XBMC-its an insane piece of software.

Why do people keep saying this!!!

You CAN use Classic Splinter Cell. :!:

I did it myself. It must be the first release of the game though, not later versions eg. Double Agent.

I did mention it involved hotswapping Stora, but fair enough you quoted me before I edited my original post :p

I'm looking to get my Xbox softmodded. So far I have bought Splinter Cell for £1, and a HiDef AV box from eBay for £10.

Do I need to buy an Action Replay thing to get the game save across? I spent the day looking in shops for the Action Replay but had no luck

Are people saying that if you have a 'Xbox plug-female USB' lead then this will be enough to add the game save? I don't have an Xbox memory card or anything (but I do have a 4gb Sandisk Cruzer flash drive/stick)... can this be used to do the Splinter Cell game save?
#30
thanks dcx_badass

Does anyone on HotUKDeals have an Action Replay with memory card for sale?
#31
can i download the software?!
#32

Would you be able to use a Sandisk 4gb Cruzer USB flash drive with this ? How would you get the (Splinter Cell) game save onto the USB drive without Action Replay? Can you just drag and drop the files over?

you need the action replay software to recognise it as you format the pen drive in the xbox first.

could email it you if you cant get it.

(i used a 2gb pen drive ok, have kept the files on the pen though as constantly doing them)

you would still need to add an adapter to get a female usb end for the pen.

maybe cheaper just to make your ownfrom controller wire and ub extension lead.

maybe not pretty but does the job

what are these called a female usb adapter?
what about a 1gig datawrite usb pen will that work?
ps can u also email a link for ac replay please!
