my phone got damaged when I was away the other week, when I phoned insurance they asked me to take it to a phone store and get a damage report with value and cost of repair on it then they would give me the funds for either a new phone or repair

Depends who your insurance is with. If the phone is lost then it's easier for a new replacement. Whereas if it's damaged, then you go through lots of hoops for repair etc. Just don't make a backup of all your stuff then loose your phone and have to claim, pay the excess and have a new phone ;-)

Ah insurance fraud. What a wonderful person you are.

Also does it affect how much your insurance might cost the next year, if you make a claim?

yes - because you will now be considered a high risk and insurance is a risk based business

Indeed, that's why I said to not do that. But what the OP does is a completely different thing.

It depends on your insurance. If you claim on house insurance etc then yes your premium will go up next year more than likely. Even if you change, you have to declare it. If you have insurance from a bank for example, there is no premium increase as it's all inclusive. You need to check what insurance cover you have.
