Post here any tips you have for entering competitions and I'll add them to this list.

1) Install the http://toolbar.google.com/ google toolbar and enable the "autofill" facility. This will speed up filling in forms because it will automatically fill in most of the information, meaning you can enter more competitions in less time!!

2) Get yourself a free email address at http://www.gmail.com and enter than when entering competitions just in case one of the companies decides to spam you with newsletters. Remember to check it frequently though in case you win!!

3) Make sure you read the small print, especially the "opt-out" and "opt-in" tick-boxes for the newsletters and "yes, please send me spam!!" opetions!! Make sure you work out which should be ticked and which shouldn't be. They usually say "tick if you do not wish..." or "tick if you do wish..."

Good luck!! I hope you win something nice!! :-D

You can add a custom identifier to your Gmail account username after a "+" symbol, any email will still be delivered to your account normally.

So you would signup to competitions or potential spam sites with...

username+whatever@gmail.com

In your Gmail account you would create a new folder, maybe similarly called "whatever".

Then create a new filter on your account specifying this value in the "To:" field, so that any messages to this address can be automatically shifted to your new folder and not hang around in your inbox.

Note a small number of web sites have an input filter on email entry fields that prevent you from entering the "+" character.

2 more tips:

1) in Internet Explorer you can double click on any box that isn't filled in by the google toolbar to see what has been typed in that type of box previously and select it

2) if you get a Logitech G11 or G15 keyboard you can program macros to the buttons so for example you can record your address being typed in, saves loads of time

Those competitions that have 1 question with 3-4 answers, is the answer always going to be the first one listed?? I have just started entering contests and the correct response is always the first one listed...

Is anyone else suspicious that if you don't opt-in to their ridiculous spamming nonsense, they don't enter you in the comp?

No, win plenty of comps, only ever sign up for mailings if I'm interested in the site. To not enter you would be illegal, and right now everyones being very careful to be above board.

Yeah, no doubt... i'm just paranoid!!

Out of interest Aggy, do you mind me asking how many comps you enter daily/weekly etc?

I see your a frequent poster and am grateful of the posts. I've recently hit an obsession with comps the last month or so!

I spend at least an hour a day entering comps online, usually in front of the news in the evening. Also any time I have a spare 5-10 mins. Weekends probably an additional couple of hours.

Never really count the number I enter, but I'd guess 20-30 a day.

At that rate I win something most weeks (although nothing this week yet...)

Do you enter the same competition more than once? I always think that they miss you out if you do...

On any comp read the T&C. They will always say what restrictions are on entry. Some will be one per person or one per household. Some comps will bar you completely if you enter twice, others will only accept the first entry.

It can be tricky if you enter lots of comps to remember which ones you have entered. Using special comp websites helps as they can keep track of your entries. I have a little spreadsheet that I use as I enjoy finding the comps and so don't use the websites.

I have a question and I hope it doesnt sound too stupid!

So I've been entering some competitions here, and over at loquax, and I keep coming across comps I think I've already entered, but then it turns out that they are the same prizes but on a different website. So, are these all the same comp or seperate? I dont want to be disqualified for entering more than once!!

EDIT: dont think my question was very clear! what I mean is, for example, Easy living, Tiscali, Homes and gardens, good housekeeping and Ideal home magazine all have an indesit/ariel competition listed on their websites to win a washing machine and a designer dress... are these all seperate comps?
