Europe's only passenger hovercraft

Hovertravel is the world’s longest running commercial hovercraft service and provides the only scheduled passenger hovercraft service in Europe. Since Hovertravel launched in 1965, the service has carried over 26 million passengers across from Southsea, Portsmouth to Ryde, Isle of Wight.

The hovercraft is a tourist attraction in its own right and offers the fastest way to cross the Solent, with a journey time of just under 10 minutes. The advantage of the hovercraft is that it can travel at extremely low tides. The low tides at Ryde, take the sea out far beyond the town's esplanade, and it has always been impossible for any ship to berth anywhere near roads or bus routes. With Hovertravel, no matter what the tide is doing, passengers can embark and disembark in exactly the right place, with no need to trundle up and down the pier as an additional requirement of their journey.

Children of all ages will find this unique transportation of hovering across the Solent an incredible experience. From the experience of seeing such a large marine craft arrive directly outside the terminal building through to the easy boarding, the anticipation from the rise in engine noise, the dramatic entry into the water and the speedy but un-boat like motion, the hovercraft experience is truly memorable.
Each hovercraft has four engines; two to lift the craft up to hover (Lift Engines) and two to drive it forward (Propulsion Engines). The speed of the hovercraft depends on the amount of power being produced by the two propulsion engines and transmitted to the propellers. However, speed can also be controlled by adjusting the height at which the craft hovers.

Hovertravel currently has two hovercraft in use, which are called Island Express and Freedom 90. They each seat 95 passengers and can reach 65 knots, although Hovertravel’s Solent route has a limit of 45 knots!

Hovertravel is the quickest and most exciting way to visit the Isle of Wight. Situated just off England's South coast and less than 2 hours from London, the UK's Holiday Island and Dinosaur Capital of Great Britain, the Isle of Wight is the perfect destination at any time of year.

There are lots of things to do on the island, such as visiting the amazing beaches, getting involved in the Festival atmosphere with events such as Bestival and Rhythmtree, and taking part in many other family orientated activities.
