We’ve teamed up with The Lingholm Estate to offer one lucky reader a long weekend for four, in a two bedroom apartment on the picturesque estate, situated on the western shore of Derwentwater. Everywhere you look around this corner of the Lake District there are stunning surroundings. To the north, you’ll see the Lakeland Fells of Skiddaw; to the east, Castlerigg and High Seat will draw your eye; Newlands Round encircles the estate to the west and south.
At the heart of the estate is a Grade II-listed Victorian house, built by architect Alfred Waterhouse, who designed London’s Natural History Museum. It was these same surroundings that inspired Beatrix Potter to conjure up Mr McGregor’s Garden in The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The author spent nine summers here in the late 1890s and early 1900s, at a time when Lingholm would be let out as a fully-furnished summer house.
You could follow in her footsteps today, staying in one of the many furnished apartments on the estate. The Skiddaw apartment once sat in what is now the main bedroom of the house, where the famous author painted a view of Lingholm called ‘The Rain’. That same twin bedroom is where you could sleep during your stay, waking up to dramatic views across the surrounding countryside.
The Skiddaw apartment, set in the eaves of the house, also has a spacious lounge with a dining table, upon which you can eat overlooking the mammoth mountain. It’s a place full of fantastic small touches, with ornate furniture, sumptuous furnishings, and the opportunity to book in a complimentary trip to the nearby Armathwaite Hall’s luxury spa – including access to the gym, pool, award-winning heat rooms and the outdoor hot tub. Guests can also head along to The Lingholm Kitchen and enjoy breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea in stunning surroundings, dining on cakes, bread and biscuits that are made on the estate itself.
You can live in the lap of luxury for a long, lazy weekend at Lingholm, making it the perfect base for a journey around the Lake District.
