I'm with this guy. Since when do you need to win a place in a marathon? Don't you just register and run for charity? What an awesome competition this is. What's next? Win a hysterectomy? Win a chance to see a doctor at the hospital. Christ on a bike....

Win = free entry and no requirement to spend many hours of your life shaking down friends, family and everyone else for sponsorship.
Charity place = all the stress of having to raise the (usually at least) £2000 minimum for the charity unless you want to dip into your own pocket to cover that (or be one of "those" runners who take the charity place and then renege on the deal.

Kudos to all the charity runners btw - personally I think the marathon is easier than the fundraising you do to earn the place.

I second that - Having taken part in London this year, with a charity place, I agree that fundraising is difficult. If it wasn't, charities wouldn't need people to fundraise for them in the first place. This is a 'good' competition!

T&C 1.Entries must be made via the London Marathon website. The deadline is 17:00 Friday 18 November 2016. All winners will be notified by 17:00 Monday 21 November 2016. Please note that if you win a guaranteed race entry, you will still be required to pay the UK entry fee.

Still got to pay if you win

An entry fee? This "deal" keeps getting better!

Having said that, I never win anything, so it would be painfully ironic that I would most likely win the worst prize on earth should I choose to enter, which I would not.

I stand corrected - that is a little bit mean.

I've done the Marathon 9 times now & would love to get to 10, I did my first in 89 then 91,93,94,99,00,01,02,03..To be honest the first was a bet with my sister who said i could not do one and did it, then i just applied, I did not training for any of them...:) i remember on my last one i was running past a pub & stopped and asked someone in the crowd for a cigarette & and a drink, i finished off half a lager and carried on to a huge cheer...omg the crowds get you round...:) however i'm 46 now and the experience may be different, but i don't smoke anymore.

Give it a go..

You don't just get a place, over 250k people apply each year for a 40k People Marathon?? I think, its a question of luck..You can get in through a charity, but you have to raise a minimum amount of money.

What's stopping you from just running amongst other joggers, if you get fed up just go home.
