Win a seven-night stay at Hermitage Bay THE WHERE ARE YOU? TRAVEL COMPETITION: FEBRUARY 2017 @ Conde Nast Traveller

Clues:
The craggy mountain you can see dominates the landscape of this rugged region, and until the 18th century was thought to be its highest peak. The hilltop village in the foreground provides one of the best vantage points from which to appreciate it. In a 2016 survey, this was voted one of the country's top 10 favourite villages. In the 16th century it belonged to a neighbouring land, and defended itself successfully until it was finally forced to switch sides - though many traces of its original character remain. Just 500 people live here amidst the cobblestoned alleys and vaulted passageways, below a church that shares its name with an American singer-songwriter who once collaborated with David Byrne. The mountain has also inspired lines of verse, being described by a local poet as 'an immense magnolia… its bees are the fairies that surround it, and its butterflies the swans and the eagles'. Each year on 23 June, a fire is lit at the mountaintop and torches are lit to spark satellite bonfires around the surrounding countryside. Where are you?

Identify the mountain described above, then go to our competition page to enter the answer and your details to be in with the chance of winning a holiday to the Caribbean. The competition closes on 28 February 2017.

MY ANSWER: Canigou, The Pyrenees, France.

TITLE:
the village of Eus perched on a hilltop with the Pic de Canigou beyond, the Pyrenees, Languedoc-Rousillon, France.

---------------

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canigou
The Canigou el. 2,784.66 m./9137 ft.) is a mountain located in the Pyrenees of southern France.
Due to its sharp flanks and its dramatic location near the coast, until the 18th century the Canigou was believed to be the highest mountain in the Pyrenees.

Historical note: in the 16th century the village of Eus was part of the Spanish territory and successfully defended itself against the French, but 200 years later it was back in French hands after successfully repelling the Spanish. There is still a distinct Spanish influence in the town and many of the street names are Spanish rather than French.

In 2012 he released a collaborative album with American singer songwriter St. Vincent called Love This Giant.

Today, the imposing Church of Saint Vincent stands in place of the old citadel and steep cobblestone streets descend from its doors.

-----------------------

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canigou#Literature
The Canigou inspired the epic poem "Canigó" by Catalan poet Jacint Verdaguer i Santaló. In these verses Verdaguer compares the snowy mountain to a Magnolia flower.

The Canigó is an immense magnolia
that blooms in an offshoot of the Pyrenees;
its bees are the fairies that surround it,
and its butterflies the swans and the eagles......

---------------------

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canigou#Canigou_Flame
Every year on 23 June, the night before St. John's day (nuit de Saint Jean), there is a ceremony called Flama del Canigó (Canigou Flame), where a fire is lit at the mountaintop. People keep a vigil during the night and take torches lit on the fire in a spectacular torch relay to light bonfires elsewhere.

Good luck! :)
