Autumn is a magical time in the Orkney Islands. The red sandstone glows in the low-lying sun and the skies are filled with thousands of migrating birds. The days are still long enough to fill with explorations of wildlife, archaeological sites and coastal walks and, although it is still relatively warm due to the Gulf Stream that runs through the islands.

The unique landscape, culture and history of this group of 70 islands off the north-eastern tip of Scotland have inspired poets and artists for centuries. As the famous Scottish poet George Mackay Brown wrote:

"The essence of Orkney's magic is silence,
loneliness and the deep marvellous rhythms
of sea and land, darkness and light."

But you don't have to stay in a rural location to enjoy these dramatic islands. Kirkwall, the main town and capital of the islands is a bustling hub. Its narrow main street, lined with craft and gift shops, cafes, hotels, restaurants and bars, is a great central location from which to explore the islands. The town is dominated by the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral, founded by Earl Rognvald Kolsson in 1137. With its red sandstone walls and large columns, ramparts and vaulted ceiling, it is a must-see when visiting the capital. From here you can get the ferry to the smaller islands such as Shapinsay with its Victorian Balfour Castle – the most northerly castle in the world – or Westray with its ruined medieval churches.

The Guardian in association with Visit Scotland is giving one lucky reader and their guest the chance to experience the magic of the Orkney Islands with a five-night stay in the four-star Broad Street Gardens Apartments situated in the centre of historic Kirkwall, opposite the famous cathedral – a perfect base for exploring Orkney's main town and beyond.

Stay in one of the luxury penthouse apartments and enjoy views over Kirkwall to the south, and over the town to the harbour to the north. The modern kitchens are fully fitted with all mod cons, while the living areas have dynamic views from large picture windows. A galleried mezzanine overlooks the living space, accessed by a timber stairway. There are two fully reclining leather sofas, as well as a flatscreen TV with Freeview, DVD player, stereo, free Wi-Fi access and a selection of DVDs, books and games.

You'll also get two return flights, courtesy of Flybe operated by Loganair, from any of the main Scottish airports to Kirkwall.
