Win tickets to the Oppitts’ production of Bugsy Malone.

A theatre group for Weston-super-Mare youngsters is rolling back the years to the 1920s for a performance of Bugsy Malone.

The slapstick musical follows the rivalry between two half-witted street gangs and the washed-up, one-time boxer who steps in to take control of Fat Sam’s group of mobsters in his Grand Slam Speakeasy.

Together, they hope to give Dandy Dan and the boys what they have coming to them.

Despite the seemingly dark themes, Bugsy is full of good, clean fun, where the characters are hilarious cartoonish caricatures, and the weapons are guns firing whipped cream, and flour bombs and custard pies.

It will be performed by the award-winning Oppitts, the junior section of Weston Operatic Society.

Bugsy Malone is a 1976 British musical featuring only child actors.

It is loosely based on events in New York and Chicago in the early 1920s prohibition era, and the exploits of gangsters Al Capone and Bugs Moran.

The film introduced 13-year-old Jodie Foster as Tallulah, and she later went on to win an Academy Award for The Accused and The Silence Of The Lambs.

It received 15 award nominations, including an Oscar for best original song score, and it also resulted in two BAFTAs for Foster.

A stage version was released in 1998, and features the same catchy songs from the film, plus some extras.

Bugsy Malone will be performed at the Blakehay Theatre, in Wadham Street, on July 26-29 at 7.30pm.

There will also be a 2.30pm matinee on July 29.

Tickets, priced £12.50, are available on 01934 645493 or http://www.blakehaytheatre.co.uk

The Mercury has teamed up with the Oppitts to offer a pair of tickets to the show.

The competition closes at 10am on July 21. Usual Archant rules apply and the editor’s decision is final. By entering the competition, you agree to be contacted by Archant.
