A new garden and harvest festival is coming to Somerset this autumn and is hosted by TV gardener and Somerset Life columnist Toby Buckland in the stunning house and grounds of Forde Abbey, near Chard.

The two-day festival on 16 and 17 September follows in the footsteps of Toby’s popular spring Garden Festival in Devon, bringing together two-days of garden fun with more than 150 specialist nurseries, artisan food, and local arts and crafts along with free gardens talks from garden celebrities including Charlie Dimmock and BBC One Show’s resident gardener Christine Walkden.

Talks and demos

The programme of talks and demos includes the well-known garden celebrity Charlie Dimmock who will join Toby in Forde’s stunning Great Hall on Saturday, while BBC One Show favourite Christine Walkden will be dispensing her no-nonsense, down-to-earth advice on Sunday. Other highlights include demos on growing and arranging British flowers, making soap with ingredients harvested from your own plot and botanical gin-making.

Head gardener Danny Burlingham will be giving tours of Forde’s stunning walled Kitchen Garden while West Country tree grower and nurseryman Kevin Croucher of Thornhayes Nursery is taking festival visitors on guided tours of Forde’s amazing trees, which include unusual specimens such as Red Oak, Swamp Cypress, Montezuma Pine and Cut-leaved Lime.
