What is chlorella?
The History of Chlorella
Chlorella is a species of microscopic, single-cell, green algae that grows in fresh water. Research indicates that chlorella emerged approximately 540 million years ago when it diverged from chlamydomonas (unicellular green algae). This incredible small plant has withstood all Earth’s weather and climate conditions and continued to survive maintaining its nutrient integrity. This is down to its protective and tough cell wall.
Since chlorella is so small, it was not discovered until the end of the 19th century, when it was named after “chlor” which means “green” in Greek, and “ella” which means 'a small thing' in Latin.
Nutrients of Chlorella
Chlorella is a 100% natural, organically pure, nutrient rich, whole food. Warmed by the sun, it grows phenomenally quickly and gram for gram contains a concentration of nutritional components such as vitamins and anti-oxidants including vitamin A, chlorophyll, vitamin B12, vitamin D and folic acid. It is also rich in nucleic acids and Chlorella Growth Factor (C.G.F.).
Chlorella is one of the most scientifically researched foods and has many clinically attested health benefits. Although it has yet to gain popularity in the UK, it is claimed that an incredible 30% of the Japanese population take chlorella regularly, where it is regarded as a whole food.
