Windows 7 is still free, and ubuntu is a doddle to install these days. I was poring over this unit this morning, trying to justify a reason to buy it....a real bargain and voted hot.
#3
This is a great little unit for what is a bargain price, voted HOT!

Quite a few user reviews
that are worth checking out before you hit that buy button e.g.

Nice piece of kit but be aware the motherboard will not support AMD X2 7750 L3 cache CPU, code 155158, there is no mention of this in the speck or description

totally agree with the last comment made the unit looks very cheap and tacky the dvd drive eject button is terrible.

Am I right in thinking this is a 6100 VGA card? In which case, can we expect HD?
#8
Can someone explain to me what I can use this for? Is this basically a PC but one that would go in my lounge and play stuff on my TV?
#9
Yes. but I also believe it can be used as a PVR when combined with a TV tuner? But dont quote me on that till somebody else can confirm.

Not had much exposure to this kind of setup.
#10
what is it? some kind of dvd player or a computer thingy?
#11
Where do you get windows 7 for free?

Put windows 7 or vista home premium + and this can be used as an awesome pvr. Would highly recommend the media center setup and this is very good value to get started. Shame there is only one pci slot but a dual freeview tuner should be enough for most.

Using an efficient decoder such as coreavc this should handle HD stuff too.

Hi Beans,

Yes, it s essentially a 'computer thingy' lol. You would plump it out with a few core parts as posted earlier in thread, and you can connect it to a TV to stream PC content.

As some of the previous posters have already mentioned, if you add a TV tuner you can also use this as a kind of mock Sky+ box be being able to record directly to the internal hard drive.

There is also a internal DVD unit, so i imagine you can watch DVD's directly too.

Dont forget the Windows 7 trials / betas will be expiring soon. So unless you apply some sort of patch you will not be able to use it.

Just been reading the reviews:

"As for the 1080 HD playback, I have 2gig of ram and an X2 4200 CPU and can confirm that 1080 mkv files don't play well at all. They might with a better CPU though."

I think the graphics card might be the main bottleneck though:

"The on board graphics card is very very underpowered. Would have been better to have a second PCI slot so the that an graphics card could be added."

"Interestingly you could update the graphics by buying a PCI-E card and a flexible riser."

I have one of these running as a home server/media centre under my TV and its worked great for me

Athalon x2 proc,
4 gig of RAM,
2x 1TB hard drives..

The only thing i would say is the stock cooler needs cleaning out quite a lot and its not the best with its native cooling but for £100 with a free OS and £100 of extra's from ebuyer.com or similar its a bargain setup..

Would Windows Media Centre 2005 play nicely with this bit of kit? Am looking at getting an HTPC but not sure whether to go with an old PC (it'll be in a cupboard so it doesn't need to be pretty) or whether to opt for something like this. Also a bit put off by the lack of expansion and the limited onboard video capabilities...

Would I be able to plug in an external USB2 HDD and access the media from that?
Would I be able to run SlimServer/SqueezeCenter as a process in the background like I do from a PC?
I assume the answers to these questions would be 'yes' but stand to be corrected.
#21
It seems a nice little machine but many of the reviews on ebuyer say it has problems with the graphics - for a HTPC that's just no good. Having spent some time fiddling with a machine to make it a htpc if it doesnt work consistently its just not worth having.
#22
would make a nice myth-tv box as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythtv opensource(free) personal video recording operating system.
#23
It plays x264 720p fine, but the fan is very loud and there are known issues with the graphics card via HDMI. I would be very careful buying this.
#24
Basically it's cheap because the graphics card is poor and cannot be upgraded.
#25
Oh well. I guess it's gonna suit those who have simple requirements, but not those that need to squeeze a bit more out of their rig.

Thanks for the comments all. At least people have a better idea of whats on offer here.
#26
FYI, the riser card is PCI not PCI-E! So you can't put a PCI-E graphics card in here.

I can confirm this.

The 6150 should be good for 1080i. . .

managed to order but now get this message:

During processing of your order we have noticed that 1 or more items is either out of stock, restricted or discontinued. This will potentially delay the shipping of your order.
Click the ' STOCK WARNING' link below on the item highlighted in red for more details

maybe this comes up when you preorder but should be taken into consideration if you are buying additional components i.e. you might have lots of components but no case.

The stock might be allocated for a period of time when people add it to their cart. - then is released when the order is not completed

Didn't know I needed a media PC until I saw this and realised I had all the bits to build it up :)
Unfortunately , I got it in my basket but the site froze before I could pay for it and now OOS, on pre-order and back up to £149 :(

One not for anybody installing Windows 7 on this. You have to install when using VGA as the 6150le driver with the installer BSOD on HDMI. Once you update the driver you can use HDMI.

I paid £149 for this a few weeks ago. I am using the HyperX RAM, but sadly it will only run at 667mhz due to the motherboard maxing out at 1.8v. Plus you need to do a BIOS as the BIOS shipping with it is awful.

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MSI_Media_Live You'll need an XP machine so you can do the BIOS update.

It handles 1080p video fine. However it wont play DVDs, I don't know if it is the DVD drive or a decoder issue. But it just stutters and judders and sometimes gives pink/green blocks.

The stock cooler is very good, and it is silent, the Sky HD box is much noisier.

For £150 the case and cooler are a bargain. I plan to upgrade the motherboard in future with one that has good onboard graphics. It takes a bog standard mATX, and a HTPC case with silent mATX PSU, silent liquid cooled Heatsink, and IR receiver, bluetooth, wifi and official MC Remote (also works on the 360) are a steal. Add a good £50 mobo and it is still a bargain. The Screen which has the IR receiver, bluetooth and wifi uses standard USB headers so that can be used with any motherboard.

Now showing as £149.98

Do we think these will drop back down to £99 at some point?
