I went to get some new specs. today. I had my eyes tested at Vision Express, I'm badly long sighted ( +5) so I always opt. for the thinnest lens possible. V/E offer a lens with a 1.74 index, but I was put off by the price: £291. This cost is in addition to the frames!!

I called into Costco on my way home and was staggered. The price of their 1.74 index lens is £119. And the frames are considerably cheaper there too. That's some saving.

I know you have to be a member (or know a member to get in, but you must know someone?).

Thought someone else might also be able to benefit???

i'd second that. i get my designer frames then set it at the opticians in asia. they even do your prescriptions as part of it. for example my glasses i got there cost me £100 in total.
hi-index (about 6.5 each eye!), multi-coated, frames are steel + hard plastic with flexible sturdy legs ... oh and nikon lenses.

I'm the opposite, very short sighted, but I have the same problem with lenses. The last time I needed a pair i went to the opticians found the frames I wanted and googled them. Long story short I ended up using a firm called Just Rimless who seemed to have a very professional website and an honest approach to buying prescription glasses over the net. My optician wanted £75 just for the frames, Just rimless supplied the same product in around a week for £65 including superthin lenses and an anti-reflection coating. I have been buying glasses for 20+ years and despite reservations about buying over the net I really cannot fault the product. My e-invoice is copied below.

Thanks for the info. I just checked out http://www.justrimless.co.uk their 1.74 lenses are £100 +frames (good price) but unfortunately they only go up to a prescription of +4 (that makes me feel real deformed!!).

I just can't get my head round buying glasses on the net though, I feel I want to try them on first.

Has anyone else got a similar prescription? (+5). My current glasses are not thick at all (they are the 1.74 lenses) but I was told today that I shouldn't choose the styles without compete frames 'cos they would be too thick!!! Anyone any experience of this, I really like the frmaes with an open bottom section???

Thanks

Glad to see you're as blind as me, you've cheered me up...I was getting depressed with the >5.50 whinging about having poor sight!

My glasses don't have thin lenses and are a centimetre thick....stylish....I second the contact lenses appreciation.

I had -5 and -3.75 + a stong astigmatism and wore glasses or lenses everyday. I paid £400 per eye for lasereye + £300 for wavefront, £1,100 total, and now I need never spend any money on glasses or contacts again. I pay £60 per month and in November it's all paid for. :)

took me half an hour to get a contact into one eye lol, so i gave up. some people just have an aversion to foreign things into their eyes ....

Hi All,
Having read the posts I wondered if anyone had any luck getting good sunglasses via the net......my partner has thin lenses in her glasses due to a high prescription and they cost us £300 a month or so ago....she now need sunglasses but we have been quoted £200 for them - I think they were standard thickness but a wraparound style frame (which she needs to block the sun out).
Any help would be appreciated.

as usual therd are 1.74 lenses and .74 lenses, just like different varieties of apples, pears, bananas, types of wine and shoe sizes. If you are +5.00 (or -5.00 fr that matter ) you ought to be in contacts anyway - and we can do without the whinging about not being able to wear lenses cos'the eyes are too dry" malarkee. thats just flannel. There are great cl's out there now.

So with wrap frames they need to be on a particualr base curve, otherwise the vision is rubbish and you;ll get headaches and what you'll describe as "eye strain".
If you do decidee with any rx above -2.00 to get them off the ney then to be honest think again. UYou'll be replacing them for ever an ever and it'll cost you more in the long run.

As to laser treatment...don't get me started. Personally i don;t fancy scarred eyes for life. But you go ahead, they are your eyes!!

Ohh did I rant? you bet!

-5(ish) with 2(ish)cyl absolutely no problem with either of these two places on line

www.optical4less.com Hong Kong
www.goggles4u.com Pakistan.(people think it is US)

£15+ high index are obviously more, with the rimless styles there is little to go wrong.

Got a nice pair of rimmless, hingless titaniums for £30. thing is at these prices you can get plenty of pairs, tints to match outfits and a rose tinted pair always comes in handy, if they break or get scratched(coatings are free) you order another pair.

I tried a pair of cheap vary focals and they were OK so will go for a more expensive pair(thinner) when I am ready./

Loads of other places on the web that can churn out the goods at sensible prices.

Remember a place like the hong kong one will be doing a lot more business than your UK lens lab.

Simon0w - which company did you use? I thought it might be the 2,000 + price for laser treatment?

I used optimax. There are risks with any operation but I'm happy that I have perfect sight and should only need reading glasses in the future. A collegue at work had his done 20 years a go and still has perfect vision.

Thanks for the tips guys, I can't wear contacts 'cos of a high astigmatism (I've wasted money on two pairs in the past). Yeah, I know they have weighted lenses, and hard lenses should also be good for me, but I persevered, and it wasn't the irritation that put me off it was the poor vision with both types!!!

And laser surgery isn't a great option for long-sighted people - yeah I know they say it can be done, believe me I've spent many hours investigating, but the conclusion I've come to is that the chances of success are not high and the chance of complications is considerable, most of the high-street people wont touch prescriptions like mine, so the cost ...

I think I'll get a costco pair, and also order a pair from one of the cheap online alternatives so I can compare, prepare yourselves for my written comparison at a later date!!!

Thanks again

dazzy b, the way your lenses are made are thicker in the middle then thinner at the edge(all plus lenses like this, -ve lenses the other way around), so if you were to go for rimless in order to make the edge thick enough to drill through and secure you would end up making the centre extra thick!!!
