how is this applied please .... it would appear quite expensive if you have to put the whole bottle in the washing machine to get one jacket waterproof or is it just a certain amount you need to put in or is it more economical appling it in a hand wash ... any comments appreciated

Had a look at some of the comments and somebody mentioned that you had to use both for proper effectiveness which could be expensive but managed 10+ items.

They also do 5l for circa £38ish, forget the tech wash, just make sure you rinse out all of the detergent and conditioner from your washing machine drawer. Then put it on a hot rinse, and then start to proof garments. I bought the 5 l and after proofing I wash the garments in soap flakes only so it does the same job as the tech wash, far more economical

Add 100ml per item you want to proof to the washing machine.
So this will do ten "proofs", which to be honest makes it expensive really and gets a cold from me. Mountain Warehouse do a all in one (wash n proof) product for half this price - one capful from a 300ml bottle at £7.50 - same amount of proofings and half the price. Works the same and believe me I have tested it out being an all year round biker.

Nikwax TX is rather suspiciously the exact same smell and consistency of watered PVA glue (_;)

Out of stock. Unsurprising, if people are buying 10 at a time.

This is the stuff I have been using for about 3 years now - http://www.mountainwarehouse.com/walking/equipment/waterproofer/wash-n-proof-300ml-p2714.aspx#Deliv
They have it behind around the counter of every Mountain Warehouse I have been in.
One cap per item and it keeps me dry through the winter months on the motorbike - never had a single bit of wet through my suit in about 6 years of owning it. Use it daily through winter for 30 miles a trip. Was using something by Grangers IIRC before this, does the same job for cheaper.
