To anyone worried about putting personal info on there have a look at truecrypt. It will create an encrypted container for you to put your files in. No one will be able to look in that providing you use a proper password: truecrypt.org/

    Basic process would be:

    1) Create a truecrypt container on your home pc of a suitable size to store the backup (keep it relatively small for your most important stuff as remember you are going to have to upload it which may take a while if its large)
    2) Bear in mind you can't resize the container afterwards so think carefully beforehand
    2) Upload the container to HDG
    3) Mount the container using truecrypt on your home pc
    4) Upload your files into the truecrypt container stored on HDG
    5) When you're finished, dismount the container
    6) Voila! Encrypted data that no one look at (including yourself if you forget the password).

I've used Truecrypt for many years and find it is good to encrypt large amounts of data into a single file or volume. So, I have a file or disk volume several GB in size, encrypted and stored on a pen drive and kept in the office.. perfectly safe offsite backup option! Don't need anything else...

If you still need an online option - IMHO, using Truecrypt can be a pain for for online backups.. especially if you want random access to a single file.

If I want one 10KB excel file from an online backup, I have to access/download 4GB+ of data and decrypt to get 10KB...!?

Solution ?? Use AxCrypt instead.. (http://www.axantum.com/axcrypt/)
Axcrypt integrates into Windows shell and can create password protected files (including .exes) which have a high level of security.
So when you upload these single files to your online backup, you can have a random access to the files you need..

ps: not affiliated to any of these companies.

What exactly does 'unlimited' entail though? I doubt they'll be happy with me uploading terrabytes of data?

    Usually it's encrypted.

None of that matters - since the service is provided by livedrive.com

Wonder how this will cope with OSX

    Not very well.

There's a Mac "Tech Preview" but it isn't very good. No Linux options either.

    Works great with WIndows though.

There's a beta type version released last year, but is a bit patchy as it only works for some people. Livedrive have said an updated official release version is due any day now.

So what happens if this reseller decides after a few months they can no longer afford to keep going and shut down their reseller account, do we still get our 1 year or are we SOOL? Do Reseller accounts have a minimum time they have to be registered for or can they just buy 1 month and then scarper?

Also I notice this is the Ops first deal, am I being paranoid in thinking the Op may be affiliated in some way with this company?

Any random person could go buy a reseller account and then post their £1/year deal on HUKD and make a fortune.

I moved from HDG a while ago, there are quite a few on ebay who offer livedrive at better price, time will tell if they also get shut down.

An alternative would be purchase one of the unlimited google accounts on ebay (I think they use US education accounts) and use some software called cloudbacko to backup to google, the home version is free cloudbacko.com

Why cold? Seems a fantastic deal.

it looks like the small company image is putting people off, despite livedrive (the people doing the backup) been a large company

I think even at £24 it's a pretty good deal for unlimited?
Very tempted as I know exactly how it feels to lose all your data, even when it's backed up on-site

yeh thats what i thought cymru1978. Ive got my nan and uncle to go for it.

This is a great deal. If you get this directly from Livedrive is almost £40 a year. So even £24 is still great.

I've had this for couple of months and can recommend the service as is unlimited storage and number of PCs and it max out my broadband speed for upload/download. Before I signed up I couldn't find a vendor that offered all this for a reasonable cost for my 80GB of personal data.

Brilliant offer, nothing worst than not having a backup, got about 30gb of family photos and videos that I treasure most, so this is perfect. Heat!!

worried about this being legit tbh!

What happens if they up their prices substantially once they have enough people on board, which i suspect they will! Can the files be easily transferred, either to a similar site or hard drive etc ?
  19. barijohn's avatar
Cheers OP, been thinking of some online backups for ages now. Just none seemed to give me what I want for reasonable prices :@)

Very good offer worth a punt for a pound, also the security of paypal for payments. Hot!

I use Mozy which is a great system at $4.95 per month for 50GB, will take a look at this though it means re-uploading 40GB of files again

exactly - signing up is the easy part, taking this forward to year 2 will be a pain
  23. alchemistkevin's avatar
not voting cold though. its a good deal if you're ready to pay double figures year 2 onwards

still though, for £24 a year, it's pretty competitive for what the offer is.
  26. harshavardhana_reddy's avatar
Is the subscription can be cancelled after one year?

Backups are something usually worth paying for.
  28. deleted266585's avatar
    Bargain, gone for it.

It's cheap at £24, but I now have a year to see if they are any good before paying that much.
  29. ShaneC's avatar
well thanks OP I've gone for it. Even £24 is a bargain for the service they offer compared to mozy. Now to start the uploads

think its daft u pay to store your personal data online for anyone to look at, if u want safety put it on a flash drive and dont connect to the net.....lol
  31. Daves_Deals's avatar
Livedrive offer a re-seller package which allows a reseller to sell unlimited accounts for a monthly fee (£39.95) and that could be why they can afford to do it so cheap?
  32. Max-Power's avatar
This re-seller will probably be laughing his way to the bank now!

Fire or theft takes your primary computer and the backup then you've had it.

I wouldn't store anything online unless it is appropriately protected though so I'll read up on it before signing up.
