Pretty sure a Christmas Carol is free normally
#2
It is, first thing I downloaded when I got one.

A Christmas Carol (by Charles D.) is out of copyright and can be downloaded for free at the Project Gutenberg site: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page. You'll find a huge number of books here for your Kindle (or any other eBook reader).

Don't forget there is a Kindle app, no
Need to buy a kindle to read the free books

sometimes buying the ebook which is otherwise free means you get some artwork too, or better formatting for the reader software

personally I prefer the free versions :-)

Is amazon the only place you can buy a kindle? What others act like a kindle because I'm looking at getting one for my father for Christmas.

Not quite sure what your comment means ... If you mean;

you need a Kindle to read the eBooks .. No you dont, you can just download the fre Kindle App for you PC, or any of the dozens of free eBook reader Apps.

Or if you mean a Kindle will not read a lot of the free eBook formats .... not true either ... Their is a great free App Called Calibre which will convert any format eBook into something the Kindle can read with no issues,.

He is saying "no need to buy a kindle" the word 'no' is on the line above the word 'need' - its kinda confusing though lol

Having had a good look at the kindle and the sony, imo the kindle is streets ahead, only thing puts me off is the way amazon try to tie you up, but as previous poster said calibre can sort all the formats out.
John Lewis do sell the kindle.
