£521 for the Playbar seems a good deal too, anyone know if Playbar has/is cheaper anywhere?

If that deal is not on now, then kind of a pointless comment surely?

Just be aware of the sound type limitations of the PlayBar. If you're after it as a main Home Theatre setup, I would stay clear. No HD Audio, no Atmos, no DTS X, not even DTS in any way shape or form. You can have a Xbox One S decode this on the fly, so you actually get some sound but all you will get is Dolby Digital and nothing more.

Just making people aware of this :)

This is the best price i have seen it. just make sure your TV can support the full DTS / 5.1 or you will just get stereo sound.

as the sound bar cannot decode theses so the TV has to. unless you want to spend more money on a little converter.

Does the little convertor option still work? I mean, the Optical Cables's bandwidth isn't enough for uncompressed file formats like Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-Master Audio? Or do you mean just to convert the 2 channels of PCM in to 5.1? :)

I have a Samsung HW-H355 at the moment, nothing fancy as only a small living room. The appeal of the Sonos was we often like to stream music throughout the house and we have Sonos on the bedrooms and kitchen, but lately have been frustrated not having in the living room. Would it be better to kee the Samsung and just buy a Sonos for the front room, maybe a Play 5? Any guidance is appreciated

If you are happy with your TV Samsung HW-H355 I would say get a Play 5.

Think the playbar come out what in 2012/3 and I have been waiting for them to add support to for DTS/5.1 or bring out a new playbar. unless my GF gets me the new Samsung 9 Series then i know it can support the playbar in full DTS/5.1

Your Samsung Soundbar comes with a sub which gives you 2.1 sound. I don't know anything about the quality of the Samsung but I'm going out on a limb here to say; the Sonos will sound better. BUT - buying the Sonos PlayBar alone will only give you 3.0 sound (not 2.1, 3.1 or 5.1), so you'll have to buy the sub too (on this 10% off deal) at £512 to make it 3.1. You could add two play ones later at the rear to make it 5.1, which is a nice touch.

The stupid thing is, your Sammy SoundBar does DTS as well as Dolby Digital, which is more sound formats than the Sonos does. But like the Sonos it can't handle any of the HD or lossless sound formats of the new era.

If it's only music you're after, you're on to a winner with either the Play:5, 3 or 1. Maybe get 2 Play:1's and add a Sub at a later date? It's your choice.

Been toying with the Play 5 for a while, we have Play 1 in Kitchen, bedrooms, similar to guy above, Samsung HW-H550 in Lounge with Apple TV connected optical audio. We subscribe to Apple Music stream to ATV, thoughts on sticking with what we have or fancy dabbing with the Play 5? Cheers guys...

Please pop in to your nearest Electrical Store and have a listen first.

I have 2 Play:5's in a stereo pair as I thought that would be THE best sound Sonos do. To some degree I was impressed, mostly impressed in fact but... I was previously using NAD VISIO 1, which I thought and still do think is BRILLIANT. Looks wise, not to everyones taste but the sound was amazing, with the only complaint as with any single speaker like this (Play:5 included) is the lack of stereo separation.

Hence why I bought 2 Play:5's. Now, quickly to the nitty gritty: the sound from 2 Play:5's is great. Great on songs like Hey 19 by Steely Dan, amazing on anything acoustic and anything recorded probably before the last 10 years. Stereo separation works perfect too.

Here's the kicker: BASS.

For me when you turn any Sonos up loud, you do so at the detriment of bass. It just somehow, dissipates with volume. Everything else stays perfect with no distortion - crystal clear. Trust me, it happens with the 2 Play:1's in the Lounge and the 2 in the bedroom too. At casual listening volumes they all sound spot on but crank it up and you lose the earth shattering bass.

I've spoken to Sonos about this (and on other forums) and the only thing to do is buy the sub. Again, reviews of the sub are amazing but at an amazing price too. Put all that price together though, and at £1400 you have a very expensive system. I have toyed with the Denon Heos systems but the looks aren't to my taste (personally) but the sound is supposed to be better. Ultimately, I've spent too much money already on Sonos. Besides the system is a breeze to use.

Would I recommend Sonos then? In short, YES. Undoubtedly in fact BUT I would advise listening to it first.

Would I buy 2 Play:5's again? Probably not. In hindsight, I would probably have gotten two Play:3's or Play:1's and bought the Sub too.

I hope my waffle helps someone :)

p.s. the sub will be with me on Friday - I hate myself. :|

the sound bar has an optical in, however I worry I would be disappointed in the overall sound quality plugging a connect into my soundbar setup? it would clearly cover the base gap that one2omg has eluded to, however for the other ranges I'm not sure my sounder would I am tempted by this option though as the connect has line in also and i'm thinking about getting an echo dot...so many choices, might need to give it some more thought!

In the last week I have gotten a pair of 1s and a 5. Love both, but today I just picked up and hooked up the Sonos sub to the 1s. OMG, I mean wow. Just running the setup routine for the sub with the test tones blew me away. I can't believe the power in the damn thing. I would like the Playbar too, but I'm aware of the limitations described, so a bit hesitant there. Have seen a lovely Canton DM75 soundbase in Richer Sounds that I really like, but now that I have the other Sonos stuff, it will bug me that it doesn't all connect I think. Trying to get my OCD past the stuff not matching I think :-)

Don't hate yourself!!! I just hooked up the sub to my Play 1s today. Wooooooowwwwwwwww. Holy cow. The power of the Bass is amazing. Even with volume down low, it is so rich it is incredible. I cranked it up and it simply rocks. Just playing the test tones during setup had me worried the noise would take out my windows. It is seriously good. Enjoy tomorrow!!!!

Ha ha ha!! X) I'm glad you are enjoying the richer sound! That's exactly what I'm hoping for.

I'm a tad excited, if I'm honest! :)

For anyone interested in this thread: GET THE SUB.

No messing, if it's in your budget, get it! It's that simple. Get it!!

It's like night and day. It's that good.

I did have a little doubt that the sub didn't have the power. I was wrong. Very wrong.

In the Sonos app, go to: settings>Room settings>select your room>advanced audio>sub

...and feel your walls crumble!

Yeah the sonos sub is pretty beefy but it's ludicrously expensive. Still, if it makes you happy then it's worth whatever it costs I suppose :)
You can of course plug any active sub into a sonos connect or connect amp, buying speakers and your own sub would be my preferred method because I'm a cheapskate and I'd buy a bunch of stuff on ebay for pennies. But the all-sonos option is undoubtedly easy and gives you control of your sub settings and EQ direct in the app.

Have to wholeheartedly agree with most of the gents on here, the Sonos sub is a must for any setup you wish to compile.

Its a fantastic piece of kit, agreed its price heavy, but worth every penny. Its completely unlike any sub I have used before, where it produces fantastic clear deep sound, but you can have your hand on the unit and it produce not rattle or rumble movement. I have teamed mine up with the soundbar, having purchased 2 additional play 1's for other rooms in the house, and the sub & playbar are a great combination. All thee talk of limited inputs is void when you here the quality of sound it produces (regardless of source material).

Big plus to this whole Sonos setup thing is the updates over wifi, using the app seamlessly, and the ease of setting up rooms/speaker arrangements. Very happy with all my Sonos stuff, and can see the addiction in purchasing more and more for every room in your home.

Ive just bought a playbar and noticed the exact same thing where the bass drops off the higher in volume, not even at high levels either. I cant believe the only way around that is to buy a dedicated sub, the playbar is obviously capable of producing bass, just wish sonos would give you more control over what it does.

I think with the PlayBar, the Sub is even more important. After all, you're after that 5.1 type setup? With the .1 being the Sub, giving you 3.1 with PlayBar but right now, you only have 3.0.

Like I said, if it's in your budget, the Sub is a must. It's probably one of the best Subs out there too, with its only downfall being, you can only use it with Sonos. I'd have saved and bought another for my Denon AVR if it worked with it. It's really that good.

Any of you peeps whom already own the Sub; a must hear track to really test it out: Unison (Knife Party Mix) by Porter Robinson. It's on Soundcloud. I appreciate the song might not be to everyone's taste but, by god does it make your Sub sing!
