came across this just now, and for a 100gb camcorder, i think this is a great deal.

theres also a free bottle of wine availible and free standard delivery. also, for the people without the funding to hand, there is a 3 payment option... i think this does sweeten the deal somewhat.

£50 Cashback - Offer ends 12PM 30th December Full HD camcorder - 100gb Hard drive, 80 x Digital Zoom, 10 x Optical Zoom, SDHC card slot for expandable memory up to 8GB

Happy shopping and dont forget to go through Quidco.

You need to register with [url]www.quidco.com[/url], then select the retailer of this deal and click through to their website. Once you've purchased an item it should show at quidco with an amount and approximate date they will pay you the cashback (this is known as tracking). Please bare in mind it can take sometime to track and is not guaranteed to work, but does more often then not. If your purchase doesn't track with them you can submit a ticket and they should resolve the situation. They also have a useful help section.

Thing is it's not really £249....the £50 cashback will be credited into the cdiscount account to spend on their site

Who the hell are cdiscount?!

They can't even spell 'installments'.

Can someone tell me if I am wrong in my thinking here (and I'm sure you will) but to get the best out of a HD camcorder you will need an HD dvd recorder.. right? yet as everyone knows HD DVDs are history and BluRay is the format to have.. so if we go for an HD camcorder does it mean we have an extra box to go with all the others under the TV just to show the family movies?

Nope, "HD-DVD" was just the name of the rival disc format to Blu-Ray: you don't need an HD-DVD recorder to play High Definition (HD) from this camcorder.

but the 100gb hard drive will soon fill up, so if I want to keep my recordings it means copying to the computer and storing on there and copying back to the camcorder when I want to playback or buying a HD DVD recorder to output my home movies to?

You don't need a HD-DVD. The files that this camcorder stores on its hard disk can be copied across to a computer's hard disk, or an external hard disk (eg one of those 1TB ones for ~£60 could store 10 full camcorder's worth!).

For playback:
- in High Def, you can connectyour hard disk to your High Def TV.
- in Std Def, you can use any DVD burning software, as you would a tape camcorder

To overcome this favourite pet of humans, miscommunication, oka confusion, here is another attempt at confusion. No prior knowledge is assumed nor demanded:

1. Terminology
The difference between HD DVD and “HD-DVD” is that the former is just a description and the latter, a propriety high definition [and now defunct] video format. To remove any possible errors at establishing communication, just re-label “HD-DVD” to “Red-Ray” and the message will reveal itself.

2. File Format
The storage of data, be it analogue or digital, needs a format. The data [file] storage format for “domestic” HD Camcorders is AVCHD [a half-hearted compromise by Sony & Panasonic/Matsushita]. Howsoever it is obtained and stored, it can be transported/transferred between devices like a PC, another HD camcorder, etc, that reads/decodes AVCHD.

File formats like AVCHD can be changed/transcoded to other file formats, like Dvd [of which there are a few but that is a problem for the device, not the user who just presses a button/buttons], say.

As such, it depends on how the user likes his [masculine for brevity] data to be stored and then presented. Going from HD to SD [standard definition as in standard Dvd format] is a quality drop, of course, and defeats the purpose of having HD in the first instance [but there are many pros & cons to this view alone]. To maintain HD, the AVCHD file can be copied onto a PC and thence, using various software, be re-coded/changed to the appropriate fromat & recorded onto a Blu-Ray blank disc or even onto standard blank DVDs in HD format [but you might need many blank Dvds to store just one recording. And why does an end-user have to do all this? Because the modern-day mantra for greed-cum-fear is called, "Stealth thievery through multiplicity of choice", even though all realise that you can only wear one shirt at a time.

Warning this is 1080i = interlaced = garbage

Films should be shot in Progressive scan only unless you like lots of feathering around anything moving!

I have been trying to find reviews and samples of this VC, The reviews I have found so far rate it as a reasonably good picture, they dont rate it much on functionality though. Would be interested in seeing peoples opinions of this if they get it. I have read that it has a Type C Mini HDMI connector so if anyone gets on to connect it to HDMI to your TV you will need a Type A to C HDMI cable, which is not included.

As for 1080i and not 1080p, I agree that 1080p would have been better but I have watched a lot media or TV on 1080i and this has not put me off in the past. Sky TV for instance is 1080i and even though not briliiant is not bad.
