At the moment, Oyster photocards for 11-15 year olds are free for London residents, or £5 for people who live outside of London, where the £5 goes onto the card. It has been like this for a while.

This is a deal, as they are going to cost £10 from September 1st, and that £10 is an application fee - it won't be credited to the balance on the card.

They give free/cheap travel in and around London, specifically:
* Free travel at any time on buses and trams
* Child fares on the Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail

You can apply if you are:
* Over 10 years and 11 months
* And under 16 on 31 August before the start of the academic year

If you live in London, you need to fill out a form and take it to a Post Office and get the card in 2 weeks. If you live outside London, you can fill it in online and get it in 3 weeks.

When I was 15 and had to renew my transport ID, bloke made me write in my date of birth, i lied by 2 years making me 13, result: extra 2 years at child prices

Technology gone and killed that :)

5-10, 11-15 and 16+ Oyster photocards are FREE.
They don't cost £5.
(There may however, be a fee for replacing lost/stolen cards).

^ Correct!

Ok I've sussed this out. It is free at the moment. If you are a non London resident it costs £5 but that is put onto the card and refunded if not used. However it is going to cost £10 for non London residents from September and that money will not be put onto the card.

Its going to cost £10 from September 1st whether or not you live in London.

I have updated the first post to make it a bit clearer. I don't live in London, so I didn't read the stuff for London residents.

It's the same for the non-residents' 5-10 card, which I've just ordered for my nieces: there's currently a £5 fee when you apply online but we can get that refunded from the card when we collect the cards in London because it makes them free on everything, pretty much - I decided it was worth getting the cards simply to save the trouble of trying to get free-travelling 5-10 year-olds through all the automatic barriers!
