12 Asda Long Life super alkaline AAA batteries 88p instore
Packs of 12 AAA alkaline batteries are 88p in my local Asda in Carlisle. There was no reduced label, they were just alongside the other batteries.
Presumably they're a discontinued pack size - they were next to packs of 16 of the same kind that were priced at £4.60. (16 pack on the Asda website: http://direct.asda.com/ASDA-Long-Life-AAA-Batteries---16-Pack/001134706,default,pd.html )
I've bought these before and they're decent batteries.
Presumably this is national in stores that still have stock.

You can waste money if you want - the big brands are overpriced for what they are.
Don't take my word for it though - I've found a site with some tests that compare the life of different brands of AAA alkaline batteries - here.
Some of the battery life figures from that site:
Asda long life batteries: 3 hours 36 minutes
Tesco long life: 3:37
Sainsburys extra long life: 3:42
Energizer Ultra+: 3:46
Duracell Plus: 3:16
Duracell Ultra: 3:41
Kodak Max: 3:09
But at this price you would be mad not to have a punt

Agree friends always get the Kodak ones from the pound shop but for anything less than a remote they are awful!!!
Hope they have some in York today
Cheers
