Having agonized over another 3G modem (posted last night) I found this on Amazon which is £20 or 25% less than it was a year ago when I bought mine.

I know preloaded SIMs are already pretty cheap on Amazon but this looks like a good way to get the modem if you haven't already.

Prolly not the bargain that was seen here on expansys, but when that runs out there's always this, no rush. Getting 12Gb with your modem, from 3, is a sure way to avoid any problems that may be encoutered by using SIMs marked 'not for sale separately'.

12 months start from when you first 'activate' your SIM. I waited 11 months and used cheap fleabay SIMs in that period :)

Nice fine OP! Hot!

As the other deal (3Gb for £17.99) has since expired this is now the best value. Any reason for the cold vote(s) would be appreciated.

This is hot.

What I would like though is for there to be no time period cutoff. So 3gb may last longer than 3 months and 12gb could last a lot longer too. I have not seen such a beast, so please let me know if I am wrong...

I think Vodafone used to do what you mean, AberdeenDad. They discontinued it a couple of years ago and it is now impossible to get hold of. Sure they must have had to wipe your credit sometime though, same as with mobile phone SIMs. Since the demise of that product 3 have offered the most generous expiry limits and compelled me to make the purchase.

You might be able to pay per day (some providers are as cheap as 20/30p) and just keep your SIM active by using it every 3/6 months. I somehow doubt they would let you use these conventional SIMs inside a 3G dongle, and likewise would seek to prevent you tethering your phone as a modem.

I'm not sure how lightly you intend to use it?

If you have a fallback landline then a mobile may be cheaper (T-mobile 6months for £20). If you just don't get online that often then perhaps a cyber-cafe/library would be your thing?

But as I recall, top ups for the VodaDongs are £10-£15 for 1Gb. Same price gets you 3Gb on 3 if you shop around. Also beware the T&C's, now incredibly hard to find. Almost all modern SIMs expire credit left unused for a set time. Don't think they thought of that way back when but as with utility providers, they are more or less at liberty to change the charges and T&C's to whatever they like.
