Thanks ray..as usual very tempted by some of these Dell laptop deals but must wait until 2007 when I will take the plunge.
[mod]#2
Now that Dell have seen for to drop the price on this by £51 this morning to a delivered price of £478 it has to have become a billy bargain at well under the £500 mark.

Nice one :) Thanks for the update Mike!

I din't think there were dual core amd mobile processors

Thanks for the post dc2447 :) Just out of interest, could you mention why it's not such a great deal, as it helps when comparing systems ;-) Thanks!

As Ray said you do need to select the lowest available warranty to get he price in the deal. It is working still, I just tried it.

On this model there is a choice of wiireless card options, both at the same price.

Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g 54Mbps Wireless Mini Card18

Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band 802.11a/b/g 54Mbps Mini-PCI Wireless Card33

Any suggestions as to which is the better option if at home and on the road ?
#15
The Mini PCI Wireless card is for using in a slot [like PCMCIA is], the 1390 Mini card is inside the laptop.
[mod]#16
Im think you will find both of these cards are internal and the best would be Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band 802.11a/b/g 54Mbps Mini-PCI Wireless Card33 add £0.00 as its certified for all 3 groups

Dell havnt updated the site to the 1490 but this is pretty much the same I think but a later version:
Quote:
Dell Wireless 1470 (802.11a/b/g) miniPCI Card
This miniPCI solution offers the latest in wireless technology supporting the new Wi-Fi certified IEEE 802.11g specification. The integrated Dell Wireless 1470 miniPCI solution offers enhanced maximum channel speed of up to 54Mbps while maintaining interoperability within the 2.4GHz band with full compatibility to 802.11b networks. The Dell Wireless 1470 offers, on average, greater data throughput than the previous generation Dell Wireless 1450. The Dell Wireless 1470 (802.11a/b/g) miniPCI solution supports key security features like Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), WPA2 and 802.1x and is Cisco Compatible with Cisco Compatible Extensions version 3 certification.

Thanks Mike :) You're probably right, I thought I read somewhere the mini PCI cards were for slots, but I'm probably thinking of PCMCIA replacment which is smaller?
#18
As far as I can see both wireless cards are internal but can anyone confirm. I wonder why Dell are offering both at the same price ??
#19
It is a bit odd to offer both at the same price, I agree. So if the 1490 can give you more chance of using WiFi more efficiently, it would be best to go for that

Hi Guys,

Those in the know with Dell notebooks........

When speccing this up, is it worth getting the XGA TFT Display with TrueLife over the standard screen for the extra £35.25?
A friend of mine has one of these high gloss screens on his Acer laptop and I'm not sure it was better? Any thoughts?

Try to borrow a glossy screen one for a while as some just cant get used to them, I didnt like mine when I first got it, but once used to it I was happy.
