Good find, as it would be ideal as a desktop replacement for internet browsing and office admin.

It's a very cheap laptop that may suit some people fine. Personally I'd rather pay an extra £50 for a better build quality and Windows 7, but that's not to say this isn't a good deal.
#4
Just noticed this is also listed @ ebay, item # 200466588167.
Same price, same company and you can check feedback, which is good + get Paypal/ebay protection.
#5
A bit silly of them offering the same price on ebay really, as it'll cost them £10 more in ebay fes compared to website sales...!

Good deal though.

it will make them a sale which makes the £10 reduntant as person has to actually go to website to buy there

sorry i write as a stream...
i mean that they would get a sale they may not have otherwise made.
to make a sale on the website they need the buyer to visit the website.
making a sale is better than not making a sale so there is more chance if also offer on ebay.
as long as not making a loss via fees on ebay then turnover/cashflow and/or a smaller profit more often is more useful to a business.
its almost the same as quidco and cashback referrrals.

Update: Received laptop after only 2 days (stated 5-7 days). Brand new unit with backup cds supplied. Works quite fast, even with Vista, but I will eventually install W7. Nice keyboard and mouse pad. To my surprise screen is not the high glossy mirror type, which I especially appreciate, so I can go into my garden and still see what's on the screen. All in all, I am very pleased.

Mmm, tempted to get one for my folks to replace their old Pentium 4 desktop.

Does it come with a parallel port at all by any chance?
#11
No parallel or serial ports. Just 4 USB ports, VGA (with screws-in sockets), TV-out, Ethernet, Mic, Headphone. You could get a parallel to USB converter but it's not ideal. If it's a printer you want to connect, it would be easier to buy a new one with USB connection.

Thanks for the update - unfortunately the printer they have is ideal for their purposes so I'll have to purchase a converter by the look of it. :D

Or try to printing through a Network, then you can even print wireless.

Update: Just installed Windows 7 on mine and the only extra driver I needed was the Launch Manager (on included CD, it's needed to display the Fn key operations on screen). Runs brilliant fast with Aero ON.

That's great news - thanks for the update.

Unfortunately their printer is non-networked but it's the right type for what they need.

Edit - I'm surprised this deal isn't more hotter!!! :(

Hey... just need some help/advice

very interested in the laptop, however i'm not a big fan of VISTA!

i know how to downgrade to xp, but is this possible with this laptop?

i have had a few problems in the past downgrading laptops from VISTA to XP.

any help/comments/advice would be gratefully appreciated.

many thanks, Rob

Trust me bruvz. AVOID Medion. 1st from Sainsburys faulty touchpad, back 3 times till replacement with upgrade machine. Went faulty few months later, returned smashed from Medion in Germany. Appealed to Sainsburys CEO for help, they wont be dealing with Medion again apparently due to CS issues

fwiw, I've downgraded the E5211 v2 (T4200 cpu) model which I bought from Argos Clearance last summer, to XP and it ran fine when I briefly tested it. I put Vista back on to it as it ran so well.

XP drivers available on Medion's website. I believe the v2 is identical to the T3000 E5211 v1 model listed here apart from cpu, ram and hdd differences.

fwiw, I noticed the bios on my machine also has support for Medion's SLP OEM version of XP ;-)

Only potential stumbling block is the BIOS on my machine (v1.4) does not allow you to change the SATA mode from AHCI to legacy IDE/PATA compatibility mode. So you will have to find a method of installing the AHCI drivers. eg. using F6 floppy method, Nlite or some other means.

Hope that helps.

Sorry you had problems with your computer but Medion is a well established brand that has done good business in europe (mainly Germany) for many years. The new issue of PC Pro magazine is just about to come out is the PC Pro annual awards edition. Guess who gets third place in the computer brand category? Yes, you've guessed it. I bought a Medion Akoya e5211 from the argos ebay clearance outlet a few months ago. Like me, it wont win any beauty contests but i am very pleased with it.

Same here.

fwiw, I understand Medions are manufactured by Wistron, who also make similar looking machines for Fujitsu Siemens. I believe Wistron also manufacture machines for HP and Lenovo.

Yes you can run XP without problems. All drivers are on the included cd. But as bill888 points out Vista runs well as long as you keep to Basic. The only reason why I installed Windows 7 is compatibility with my other computers.

Yes DVD multi drive (DVD +/- RW, CD)

Good reliable laptop ; has Vista Basic but with extended pack so can play DVDs. I have never tried to write a DVD/CD with the laptop and pretty sure it only comes with a DVD/CD reader. Battery life around 1.5 hrs
#27
very hot
#28
Not really that hot if Sainsburys were selling it for £199 6 months ago. In 6 months you would expect PC/Laptop to comedown a way not go up. Laptops and PCs are way over priced, it's about time they were far cheaper. But as long as the public keep paying the prices they will stay high.

No, it comes with a DVD multilayer writer. You don't need extra Windows components to play DVDs, just download one of the free players, GOM player. VLC player or Media Player Classic (I only use GOM player for everything from DVD to avi files..

Since the Vista extended pack is provided with the laptop there is no need to use one of the players you mention; Windows media player works just fine.

I did'nt know about the writer capability so thank you.

Hiya well that laptop you found is better with a better cpu and more ram, hdmi and esata port, it also has an entry level graphics card which will handle some games.

As you have said you only want it for your children to do work and use the net, as you wont be using any resource intensive applications you could just purchase this laptop at £229.99 and it will be able to play online games.

Its £60 difference, so if you can afford to get the medion s5610 it would probably be a better option as it is faster and a little bit more powerful, however either laptop will be good enough for what you need.
