Seems like a good deal to me, nice looking, good spec and above all with it being Aldi you get a 3 year warranty so save a fortune on the normal silly price warranties in the other high street stores.

This is very good value for money at £349. Some people may have issues with medion, but some people have issues with everything really... some love some hate etc...

This would be ideal for typical family use (office, internet, music, pictures, movies, downloads etc..)

A 3 year warranty is very handy too!

Have some heat from me
#2
dont know why people vote cold, a warranty on a laptop in pc world etc. can cost you anything from 100quid up. how many shops give you 3 years included in the price ?
#3
I have had a few Medion computers from Aldi.
They have never sold another brand in at least 15 years
so that tells you something! Three year warranty? I have
never needed it so that tells you something else..
This a great buy so buy it.

The problem with these Aldi offers is that there is no way you can find out whether your local has any stock before you make (and perhaps waste) a long journey. Maybe that is why ppl vote cold.
#14
Best to just call your local and check if they have it....

I have a Gericom Laptop I bought from Aldi five and half years ago cost a £999 and has never missed a beat . The rest of your comment is spot on !

Interesting offering. Not sure why people get so sniffy about Medion. They've been going for many years now, it is a well established brand in mainland Europe, especially Germany. Strikes me that they are the computing equivalent of the Ford Focus, in that they are not the sexiest looking machines on the planet but they do the job and offer a good value for money package. I bought one of the £240 Medion Akoya E5211's from the argos ebay clearance outlet a few months ago. Definitely would not win a beauty contest but otherwise i'm very happy with it.

Assuming you can find one, the spec is tempting but I personally would pass on this particular offer. IMHO there have been better deals about lately e.g the ebuyer Acer i3 cpu deal two days back. Not voted either way on this one. If you are interested in this deal, a copy of the user manual is here.

got one of these eariler this morning for my girlfriend's christmas present! she has a medion laptop that is two years old and love it so thought she would love this :)

I just bought one tonight. Looks very nice. But I got one problem. The internet speed is very slow with the computer (win7, 32bit). It is one tenth of the speed of the computers with XP and Vista. Any ideas about how to solve the problem?

actually, i think the deal is genuine - the correct link for this years deal is:

http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/15867.htm?WT.z_src=main

However, I don't think this laptop was ever really £499 as can be seen from last years deal:

Good spot.

Pretty good price for a decent spec laptop. And 3 years warranty should see it safely through to your next upgrade.

nothing wrong with medion, they made nice rugged machines

Could you help me out here please guys. There have been 3 laptop deals posted on HUKD which have caught my attention, this one, and the 2 below:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/lenovo-ideapad-u350-dual-core-ulv-p/770849

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/toshiba-t130-16w-13-3-laptop-pentiu/774307

Which offers the best overall performance? Won't be using it for games, but HD movies are a definite. I'd also need to burn DL discs, which is why I'm leaning towards the Aldi one.

My desktop pc is Core2Duo E4500, 2.2GHz, 3GB RAM, Ati Radeon 2400 HD Pro. The performance is fine, although it does struggle with HD movies - I guess this is a problem with the gfx card? Would the above laptops compare in terms of performance?

Sam - i think this one is the best.

Anyone know if this is powerful enough to pla ya game like Dragon Age or Mass Effect on low (ish) settings? Thanks..

Recommended: Core 2 Quad with 2.4 GHz (or comparable AMD CPU), 2048 MB RAM (XP), 4096 MB RAM (Vista), Geforce 8800 GTS or Radeon HD 3850 with 512 MB

ive not tried many hd movies with my aging desktop but i think its poorer spec allround than yours and plays that big buck bunny fine in 1080p - tried something like the k-lite codec pack?
(mines althon 3500+ 1gb ram radeon x850xt)
this machine should definitely have the most power but the other 2 are a totally different sort of machine aimed at portability and obviously would need an external writer

For £50 extra. Too many to choose from!

Any help on which one to go for?

Any help on which one to go for?
usually you get best performance with the bigger 15+17inch ones
you pay quite a premium in cost or sacrifice performance for 13inch and below
if portability isn't an issue for you then go for 15-17
if resolution is important to you then 15inch default res is 1366*768 and 17inch 1600*900 nowadays
acer should perform better and have higher resolution but its bulkier and more costly
tbh depends on your budget - each time you spend a little more money you get more as you seen with the acer but where do you stop? :)
btw did you try updating codecs?

I just been too my local aldi and the guy there said the deal was for last week and they got none left as they all went the first day it came out.

Shame since that was a really good deal.
#36
Thanks Brilly, really apprecaite the advice.

I'm thinking of going for the Acer now. As far as I see it:

CPU - Acer much better
Ram - Same
Gfx - Same
HDD - Same
Sound/Speaker - Medion
Screen - I prefer the larger size of the Acer. Although I believe Medion has good anti-glare properties.
Brand - Hear good things about the Medion, but surely Acer has the better rep.

Of course there is the 3 year warranty with Aldi, but for £50 I think the Acer is the one for me due to the better cpu and bigger screen.

Bought one today for my son's Christmas present, none left in my local one but phoned around and there were two left in Upminster, Essex.

I bought one yesterday after a couple of decent reviews. It is really nice design and specs are fantastic for the price. It has a brushed steel effect lid with a honeycomb type design on the edges. keyboard and touchpad are great to use and has a nice blue led around the pad (slightly annoying at times though - turned it off). Speakers are really good (for a netbook/laptop), screen is nice and clear and sharp and has a good viewing angle. I did a windows experience index and it came out as:-
CPU 5, RAM 5.5, Graphics 5.1, Gaming Graphics 6.3, HDD 5.9,

I installed BF2 (not the most demanding game of all time) and it played very well on high settings.

Streaming tv from main PC was flawless.

No idea why the person above got slow internet speeds, my router is G which is 54 and easily copes with my virgin 20meg BB, laptop speedtested at pretty much full speed, I downloaded a file from virgin website and it ran at 1,800kBs for the entire time (about 45 seconds). It is also wireless N capable if you have the router/speed to test it.

I used it for 4 hours and it only got beyond luke warm when I ran the game for some time, I switched from GPU to intergrated graphics and it ran cool again.

I would confidently say its better than many if not all £400 - £900 machines I have used (I've repaired many for friends - well fault finding usually as they are technology noobs)

It's now packed away for son's xmas gift.

That's almost a review but I am so impressed I think it needs to be told, I even considered buying 10 and whacking them on ebay for £450 a piece.

I thought it was £70 more £422 and change?

I'm sure you'd be happy with either, slightly better CPU but depends on its use, gaming and media work (converting formats etc) tend to be the few things that tax a CPU imo.

I've never known a broken ACER and a few friends have/have had them. Only problems I've know is a couple of driver problems which were fixed with some googling, oh and a tempremental touchpad which was fixed under warranty.

EDIT - I did write a full review for the medion as I bought it yesterday and not sure if its beingmoderated or not?? Not doing it all again except to say its the best £350 machine I have ever used, better than many £700 machines I have fault found for friends and family over the past 3 years.
