Qualified handyman??? - is there such a thing???

£40 an hour for a handyman??? - even at £15 an hour they're having a laugh!!!

Better off looking in the classifieds of your local rag... plenty of handymen around that will work for far less than that!

WHAT?!?!? £40 an hour is the going rate in Newcastle so getting a Tradesman for that in London is outstanding never mind the £15. However, I agree, what do they mean by a 'qualified handyman'? And the mark up comes from.... 'Materials are not included'. Given that and the fact that NO JOB takes an hour, then you're into the £40 bracket BUT as I say, £40 for a 'TRADESMAN' in London is a very fair rate.
Having said all that, I wouldn't touch these 'all in one' companies with a bargepole. Going through the 'classifieds' can be just as dangerous TOO-TIGHT-TO-PAY. You don't know a thing about any of these guys. I don't give a Monkeys Chuff how 'qualified' the guy might be, 'qualifications' DO NOT equate to providing a decent service, at a decent price, with a job done safely and tidily, that the person is honest, professional and friendly. I've seen plenty of guys in my time (I'm from Engineering/Construction), who have more qualifications than I knew existed but they've been some of the most devious, untidy, unfriendly, unscrupulous individuals you'd ever have the misfortune to meet. If you can, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get a recommendation from family or a friend who has had work done. There are thousands of small, one man band businesses out there who are simply doing a good job, at a good rate and providing a safe, friendly and decent service. If anything, it is those 'decent' one man bands that you should try and support, they'll be the ones who you can contact straight away if you have a problem without the need to go through a bloody call centre in India!

I ain't voting either way as I can appreciate that there MAY be some people with VERY SMALL jobs that they just can't do themselves and they MIGHT just squeeze out a £15 job but I'd be VERY surprised but I'm willing to give these guys the benefit of the doubt as I haven't heard anything about them Good or Bad.
