June 2014 is the expiry date printed on the batteries themselves. It's a misprint made by Vertabim on the packaging so they are being flogged off cheap...

No it is not misprint, I have tried in my mp3 player, kept on going for 50 mins only, when Duracell keeps on going for 5 hours at least. Try by yourself. And alaklines have long expiry date,at least 5 years. Or should I say,it is misprint, but on the battery itself, not packaging.

"Best before 2102" on the cardboard packing but on the side of the battery itself: "Made in Germany" and " JUN - 2014 - RW" (I bought last week)

    You were just unlucky.

These are not out of date, nor are they low in power. Excellent value for money! Bought these and Maxells first time around.

DISCLAIMER: Since i got dragged into a silly argument just for trying to help, let me clarify why i created this photo, it was a counterweight to the previous claim that "all the batteries come dead on arrival" which clearly is not the case for all. The Energizer by the side is to give an idea of where the needle on the battery tester goes when any battery is full; it is not to suggest that the capacity of the battery is the same as the Energizer, rather that whatever the capacity of the Verbatims, they come full and not dead. Anyone would know that for example Duracell Ultra would last longer than these batteries, but then you'd be paying a lot lot more for those.

They may be, but a battery tester like that is quite useless - all it tells you is that it's got some life in it or none.

Has anyone weighed them with an accurate scale? If they're mostly air they won't weigh very much.

It's a good price but do yourself and the environment a favour and buy some AAA eneloops instead. Higher initial cost but huge savings in the long term.

They are like those rubbish you get from B&M, there only good for showing people at car boots that your battery operated goods work. They don't last and only good thing there useful for are TV remote controls but then you have to be careful as they leak.

WTH are you talking about? Can you not see from the photo that it doesn't just tell if it has any power or not and instead shows HOW much power the battery has? I've used the tester long enough to know it gives a good reading in terms of how much power a battery has remaining. And yes, it has a load, hence the accurate reading even for an analogue device.

The battery tester you are using is quite useless, you need one that applies a load to the battery like for example the ZTS Pulse Load Multi-battery tester.

No it doesn't - it shows battery voltage. It might as well tell you the weather (well, almost!). What DubDriver says, although I'd go further - even applying a load doesn't tell you the full story. The only way to know for sure is to discharge the battery, which is a fairly terminal thing to do for a disposable. Another reason not to waste time, money and resources on them.
