I find whats more uncommon is finding a decent block at the low price end that lasts with the splashes and moisture
I have the same issue with pants.

These are going to be god awful. Using crap knives is no fun and dangerous. Just get one decent chef's knife to start and build up from there if you find you need more. This is good and cheap:

Cheap - I paid 12.99 for almost identical from Robert Dyas - handles were very poor plastic so took them back. But if they'd been under a fiver like these, I would have kept them, just for the steak knives.

Great price, have reserved a set. We will see what the quality is like, if they fall apart within the first year I think Homebase CS should refund or replace.

I hate to say it but I was a head chef and used knives daily, actually i trained many chefs to carve meats oh they were the days! - i agree on buying decent knives like Sabatier or Sheffield but these are for the domestic kitchen, dangerous no, they would not be allowed to sell them!
#9
Just got a call from the store where I reserved to say they mysteriously don't have any...

My Sabatiers are ancient and still just need a whisk with a steel to keep sharp. One was already very old when it came to me over 30 years ago! Considering I paid about 15.00 for it it's worked out a real bargain. About 1p a week used daily both at home and at work.I'd say anyone who likes to cook invest in at least one reasonable knife. However if you're not much of a cook and just need something to slice with occasionally these cheap sets would probably do if you're skint and have nothing else.

I paid £100 for my original knives and only 1 lives to tell the tale, but there again so does my cheap and cheerfull carving knife with its plastic handle.

Likewise. I have a couple of cheap little utility knives bought in France on a camping trip 20 years back and still perfectly functional but a good knife which feels right for your hand with some forward heft should be a lifelong friend. I think I'd cry if anyone nicked my ancient Sabatier. We're practically married!

Just collected mine from Portsmouth cheaper than sharpening blades. Steak knives alone are worth the money.

set of bog standard steak knives in argos £9.99 .so the whole knife block for under a fiver a great deal.picking up 2 sets heat added
#17
Have just ordered one (for the block). Have loads of knives but no block suitable for other than narrow bladed units. Let's hope there is space for a Japanese style width blade or two.
#18
JUST RESERVED THANKS FOR THAT

Fully agree with this 100%!!! A single high quality 6" chefs knife and it'll be better than all of this lot put together. Unless you are planning to dress up as Shredder for Halloween.

you say decent knives, and link to victorinox cheap tat? oO

What an irresponsible posting...that block looks like it could be used to bludgeon some innocent bystander to death!
#35
A serious question for those who know about such things.....do good quality knives actually need sharpened? (I ask because I bought 3 kitchen knives from Habitat about 32 -33 years ago and they are still going strong and have never needed sharpened. I have other knives which are newer and they have never needed sharpened either despite them all being used regularly.)

Well thirteen + a pair of scissors, sharpener and a big block of wood to throw at people.

i had a similar one before.. the main issue, i get used to 3 or 4 of these and rest of them sit idle !! and those 3 or 4 would be blunt within 2 months.

voted hot for price though.
